Good for you. And you did all their customers a service by calling this to the attention of their Big Guy.

But, how do you know they didn't sell your address as part of a list of addresses, to other merchants?

Went to Radio Shack on Thursday. They didn't ask me for my name/address/phone number/etc. Anyone notice when (or why) the switch happened?

All you have to do is respectfully decline to give them the information and they will respect your wishes and bypass that requirement. I have respectfully declined to provide any information to many organizations other than Radio Shack and all have respectfully honored my request. The key to everything has been and will always remain --- the attitude and respect for others.

I'm really glad you went to war against these evil corporate profiteers.

But seriously, some dickweed manager somewhere in "corporate" decided for whatever reasons (and I'm sure some of them were legit, security, etc.), that this was the procedure.

Then along you come and some low-paid stiff who has to do it the company way or get fired gets frosted by your attitude. Really. Give them a break. Here's what you accomplish by all your attitude: You make them hate their work...maybe their lives...and definitely you.

For what? You don't want your "data" out there? It's out there. Everywhere. Done. And by the way: Most stores in most states are allowed to form their own "policies" in regards to store operation--within reason, of course. This includes the "Return Policy." Just curious: Was it printed on the back of the receipt, or otherwise posted in the store?

I'd say you fell down on this one. I'd say, if you had any good feelings about what you accopmplished, they faded pretty fast.

And for everybody who applauded you here tonight...was that your kid sister or wife or even you in your first job who got beat up?

DAMN! I'm feeling superior tonight!

Retaliation warning: I feel this way of out of my own remorse. I, too, have taken on "the little people," and just about always won...and just about always felt crappy about it later. I do my best to navigate consumer vicissitudes without confrontation (difficult, I admit).

But the impulse doesn't go away, does it? Last month, I got into it with a young woman (20) at a pizza place. She had a big, bad attitude, and I laid her low with my cleverness and mental superiority--and oafish manner. I almost brought her to tears.

An hour later, I returned, with a ten-dollar gift certificate from Starbucks. Here, I said, I'm really sorry I spoke to you that way. She immediately said, No, that's all right (every time I've gone back and apologized for behavior I wouldn't want my children to see me do, service people have always said, Oh, no, that's all right), and I said, No, it's not. I was rude, and I apologize. And I'd really appreciate it if you'd accept this small gift. Do it for me, I'd feel better about my behavior. Merry Christmas.

And she burst into tears. Of appreciation and relief. I've been having such a horrible day, she cried, thank you so much!

Goes around, comes around.
