Newspaper Publishes Names and Addresses of CCW Holders
Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star ^

Posted on 01/05/2003 6:38:23 PM PST by Mortimer Snavely

Phil Van Cleave, head honcho of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, Inc., just e-mailed this:

"The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star is publishing a list of area residents who have concealed handgun permits.

Great idea Free Lance - let's tell all the criminals which houses to burgle in order to get some guns! Great service to the community.

Maybe the editor and senior people at the Free Lance should publish their personal home addresses so that they, too, can spend quality time with some of those cuddly little felons.

Here is the link:

Weapons Permits

If you find publishing CHP holder's names and addresses to be a pretty stupid idea and to be endangering of the citizens of Virginia, let them know about it. Just because they have the right to publish public information does not necessarily make it the smart or correct thing to do:

"Why not just concealed carry without a permit? I don't have a permit (but plan to get one), nor do I carry but I've never been in a situation where I was searched by police. So why not just cary without the permit?"

In some states, that's a felony. Get caught and convicted, and you'll never be able to own a firearm again. Your choice.

You folks got it right. It's the people whose names were not included in the list who are most at risk for burgularies.

Making a decision to target a CCW holder's home to steal firearms is a risky gamble that can get you dead. Why take the chance when you can burgle the home of a non-CCW holder to get the $$$ to safely buy a piece on the street?

In the light of this injustice, I'm glad there's trial lawyers around.

I think they should wear them on their hips or conceal them if they want to.

Assuming I lived in that Communist state, this paper has now created a potential mortal threat to me and my family.

Perhaps many here will think that I am over-reacting, but IMHO, they should be treated accordingly.

That's fine, but since I get pulled over at least every 2-3 years for a speed trap, I figure that's the one time a Tx Hwy Patrolman would remind me that the Leg has authorized him to present anyone carrying that's not "authorized" for felony charges....also, if I carry a Bowie Knife in Texas, I could go to jail. Sucks, but we've gone that far away from James' days.

So, I try to work within the system. I carry my 357, in a holster, in plain view, whenever I walk about on my land...and I menace all rodents, snakes and other mal-critters...and bad guys, though I haven't seen any of them yet.

"Someone could publish the names and addresses of all employees of the newspapers, and legislators who voted to make the info public."

You fogot to ad, and distribute this ,along with what they drive, to all of the street urchins and assorted riff-raff.

This is nothing new, the Memphis Commercial Appeal which is a leftist piece of scat did the same thing and even published the make and type of weapon each CCW owned. This is SOP for the left and the anti-gunners. It creates an uproar but in the end the CCW holders win out.

I wonder if anyone at the newspaper has a CCW permit. If they did, it would probably NOT appear on the website (they would have removed it).

Could a CCW activist from VA go to the same public records, and search for the names of everyone who works at that paper? Maybe they will get lucky.

It's always bugged me that so many pro-2a folks are for CCW licensing. Instead, why don't they just notify people, like felons, that they have lost their rights, and also kids under 18 cannot carry and leave it at that. Then if you get caught with one, and you're on the list, shame on you.

In other words, bad guys are put on lists, not innocents. When the government makes a list, they are either bad guys, or potential bad guys.

The more I think about it, I like the idea of the publicity.
More the merrier. Dare a burglar

I've got a sign on my front door that reads,

"I'm a member of the N.R.A., my neighbor is a member of P.E.T.A.

Which house do you think it's safe to break into"?

So why not just cary without the permit?

The kicker is that some communities don't allow concealed firearms, which makes it difficult for people passing through on the way to go hunting or even to a shooting range. With the CHP, whatever it is called locally, a person is relatively free to throw the firearms in a box or in the trunk of the car and go on about his business.

You can even search the list by name... As a domestic abuse survivor (years ago), with a life time injunction for protection, that would put a target on me. Or any women who was in the same situation.

Is this news? Of course not. A newspaper is ostensibly supposed to deliver news. Does this paper print the names and addresses of everyone who gets a drivers license?

The Indiana Supreme Court just stayed a new law that would post the identities of convicted sex offenders on the Internet. It seems that the CLU thinks that this violates their right to due process. Will someone please explain to me why it is wrong to post the names and addresses of people who have been found guilty in a court of law? And explain why it is OK to publish the names of people who have done nothing but comply with the laws that say they must register their weapons? I wonder if the CLU will rally to the cause of the gun owners? No need to answer that; I know the answer already.

It's always bugged me that so many pro-2a folks are for CCW licensing.

Let me explain it to you. Before the law was passed, a person could only carry a gun when they were "traveling" in Texas. Now, by paying or bribing, depending on the term you wish to use, a person can carry a handgun. That's called a baby step forward. The TSRA is working to expand the areas that a person can carry. Hopefully with a lot of help from the TSRA, people who don't mind being on lists, we can get the payment or bribe, depending on the term you wish to use, reduced. Perhaps someday, the members of the TSRA, meaning the people who don't mind being on a list, can work for a "Vermont Law". That is if we get enough people, people who don't mind being on lists, to back it and vote for it.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank the members of the TSRA, of which I'm a member, for being on "The List".

This needs to be protested in the strongest terms legally feasible.

So this is ok, but the pro-life website which published the names and addresses of abortion "doctors" was guilty of incitement to violence?
