How about post WWII? Best Years of Our Lives. Harold Russell who played the disabled Navy veteran passed away this past year. Many great scenes and great acting as well. Timeless in its depiction of the trauma of returning vets.

Also just checked out "The Wave" from the local library. While not directly about WWII I think it applies. It's not the best written film - it needed to be longer to flesh out the character arcs, but I have the book and plan to read that as well. It shows how we as people are no different/better/ less likely to succumb to evil than they were in Nazi Germany. We still have that strong 'herd mentality', and even moreso the less we realize our tendency to *be* sheeple.

Read about The Wave

"In Harm's Way" with John Wayne...

Phoniest looking Japanese battleships I've ever seen. To watch this movie you would think that Japanese battleships run on autopilot without any human sailors on them.

"Memphis Belle" with Tim Modine...

I recently met the REAL pilot of the Memphis Belle. He liked the documentary but was less than pleased with the movie.

..."Tora, Tora, Tora"...

Probably the best of the Pacific theatre movies, but a close second is "Midway"

Then there is "The Sands of Iwo Jima" with John Wayne.

The war in the pacific was vast but these three best capture the flavor of the time and space involved.

I'm watching the Band of Brothers, so far up to episode 8, one week at a time and this series is without doubt the best of all. I wish there was a Steven Ambrose of the Pacific.

If we had more soldiers like Maj. Van we could have over come the VN Conflict, but McMamara and Johnson know better than anyone else.

I would add – The Battle of the Bulge.

AGHHH! AGHHHHH! AGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I was hoping NOBODY would mention that movie. It is probably the MOST INACCURATE movie made about WWII. Or do you think that some Boston police detective was instrumental in turning back the German panzers due to some police work? Even the scenery in that movie was incredibly phony....unless you believe Belgium to look like a Rocky Mountain snow-covered prairie.

Another favorite, representing the Pacific theater: They Were Expendable.

My favorite scene was in the bar when they knew they were doomed to be killed or captured by the Japanese and they heard a radio tune from home.

Interesting take on Vietnam..."A Bright Shining Lie" with Bill Paxton.

The movie sucked bigtime. Even Neil Sheehan, the author, hated it. Why don't you read the book? The movie is VERY inaacurate.

"Black Hawk Down"

There was only a slight reference to him in the movie but the book pointed out that the most INCREDIBLE Delta Force soldier there or EVER was Sgt. John Macejunas. Even the other Delta Team members were in awe of him. Someday there needs to be a book and movie about Macejunas. Most recently Macejunas was involved in operations in Afghanistan and in fighting terrorists in the Phillipines. I believe he must be heavily involved in the impending war with Iraq. Macejunas, if you find out more about him, is BEYOND INCREDIBLE. We are talking about the realm of the superhuman here.

Yea, "The Thin Red Line" sucked.

True. But the James Jones novel it was based on was the BEST WWII combat novel ever written.

Ford was absolutely stunned by the devastation he saw, and became convinced that FDR had directed a conspiracy that led us into WWII.

Not true. Ford was an FDR supporter at that time. As a matter of fact he had a special screening of his Midway documentary for FDR which featured a scene with Roosevelt's Marine officer son in it. So if you say that Ford became convinced that FDR directed some sort of WWII conspiracy you should name your sources. Of course, you won't find any RELIABLE source since none exists.

then From Here To Eternity as #2!

The movie was great but still doesn't hold a candle to the book. BTW, this novel will be the subject of our Freeper Reading Club discussion next monday.
