Anybody like "Thin Red Line"? Not me. Although there was some very good scenes in it, I found it pretty damn pretentious in its artsy-fartsy indulgences and pedantic philosophizing . I guess it's fair to say it was for the most part unwatchable.
I'm a big History channel nut for the real McCoys - the documentaries showing the actual events, shorne of any particular message that movies inevitably are burdened with.

My Dad did convoy duty in WW2 so I rented "Das Bot" for him. He said the scene were the U-boat was in a storm brought back memories of storms in the North Atlantic he was in.
It was a pretty grim movie and showed that the German Navy was the least nazi-fied of their military branches.

WWII from a different angle - Mrs Miniver, Since You Went Away (from David O Selznick), Great Escape (David McCallum in one of the great bucket-kicking scenes of all time IMHO), Mister Roberts, Foreign Correspondent by Hitchcock, Casablanca, and Pimpernel Smith (Leslie Howard)

The Highest Honor is one of the most provocative and unusual movies to come out of WW II.
And it IS a true story.
Australian film, concerning a raid on Singapore Harbor and the eventual capture and imprisonment of the Australian and British raiders.
The film will stay with you for the rest of your life.

How about the Battle of Britain?
In a related point, as we speak, there is a WWII In Color documentary on the P-47 Jug - as involved in the air war over Germany.

Let's face it,l we're good at producing all star spectacles like WWF and The Longest Day with Paul Anka and any Big Star the producers could bribe to do a walk on, as well as kitschy tearjerkers like the godawful Schindler's List. If you're looking for art or a thinking man's film, seek out European productions of the 50s and 60s. Fortunately, there is a new one, that people tell me, is a masterpiece, The Pianist. Thank goodness, the Poles and the Polish Jews in it speak English, while the Germans speak German, so there isn't much reading too do in the theater, hard work to be sure! Just as it should be for the dumbed down American audience.

I liked the first half of "Full Metal Jacket".

How about "Midway"? Not to be confused with "The Final Countdown", which I guess that would have to go down in the category of "Alternative History".

And for the quirky, "Kelly's Heroes". Not one of the best, but it had some of the best lines.
As for the best, it's a toss up between "Patton" and "The Longest Day". ("Saving Private Ryan" was effective as far as being visceral, but in the end it was a rescue movie. "Patton" and "The Longest Day" had the scope and grandeur that "Ryan" didn't have).

William Holden was in several excellent WWII movies:
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Counterfeit Traitor
Stalag 17

Oh, and one other, "The Devil's Brigade". Not the most accurate account of the combination of Canadian and American soldiers that formed the 1st Special Service Force, but at least it shows that there was an SF before John Wayne.
