John Ford's "They Were Expendable". Hands down!

Since the list has now expanded to cover movies ranging from the Boer war to Somalia, lets expand the list even more. Have you seen the
original war movie?
Birth of a Nation. Now considered highly politically incorrect, see how the techniques developed by D.W. Griffith are still being used today.
On the other hand, if you like glitzy special effects and spoken dialogue, you might find it boring.

WWII: I also go with, "The Longest Day."
Vietnam: "Casualties of War." Absolutely gut-wrenching.

There is a movie about german troups and American troups who meet at a French Farmhouse where they spend Christmas Eve together, are fed hot food, before they go off to kill each other again. I can't remember the name of the flick.

One of my favorites is "A Wing and A Prayer"(1944) about naval aviators in the Battle of Midway two years earlier.
Very realistic, and spliced with actual combat footage, which was high tech for its time.
Don Ameche stars, with Dana Andrews, and a very youthful Harry Morgan and Richard Jaeckel. No nonsense stuff about the heroic efforts of our Navy airmen in WW2.

Anything with Audie Murphy or John Wayne makes me happy.
An exception to the abouve was the Dirty Dozen.

Well it's taken me about an hour to get down to the bottom of this thread, but a few films I haven't seen mentioned are: Guadalcanal Diary, and The Fighting Seebees, both John Wayne flicks.
Anything with the Duke in it ranks high.
And there was a pretty decent movie a year or so ago, about the commando operation to steal an Enigma machine, I think it was called U571.
None of these are on the order of The Longest Day or Saving Private Ryan, but it seems we've long since passed that point.
