I've taught my daughters to stand for the passing of the colors at our local parade. We are usually the first ones to our feet, and then all those around eventually join us.
I'll also applaud and verbally thank the VFW and especially the DAV for their service to our country.
Last year, a deuce and a half went by from the National Guard with a single soldier in the back of it waving. I just had to ask him if "He was the Army of One?"!!!

I agree with your assessment, but I also noted that during the Rose Parade, the military units got the most standing ovations, over any other floats or groups.

I was at a Green Bay game @ Lambeau Field (Pack vs Bills) the Sunday before Christmas. It was pretty cold outside and almost all were wearing hats of some kind.
Once the National Anthem started playing, every man in my section (and I'm sure all other's in the stadium) removed their hats and recited wonderfully.
Awesome!
Contrast this to a Dallas Stars hockey home game. I saw nemerous folks standing, but they didn't receite the Anthem and only spoke up at the points in the Anthem at the word "stars." These "fans" yell "stars."
Needless to say I hate going to home Stars games and I won't go until the fans stop being disrespectful clones.
As an aside, why don't I see POW-MIA flags at sporting events in Texas? They're a part of the flag presentation at all games I've been to in the North East and North.
There's my soapbox.

You don't have to stand for every flag in a parade - only the ones displayed by an official color guard. If you had to stand for every flag that was displayed, you would never sit down at our local parades. There are some old-timers that wouldn't be able to handle that. (toppling off trembling legs with a sigh of relief) Thank you! ;-)

My daughters waged a massive war to get flags back into each classroom
Good for them. What great girls! You're correct CyberAnt (and right too, lol) not all parades are like the one in the picture.

Actually, I didn't know that until I read this thread. :) I had no idea that you are supposed to stand and remove your hat for the presenting of the colors, I thought it was only for the playing of the National Anthem. I done got edumacated today, thanks! :)
