Plague samples reported taken from Texas Tech

01/15/2003

Associated Press

LUBBOCK, Texas - Authorities on Wednesday were looking into the apparent theft of samples of bubonic plague from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

A report was made late Tuesday to the Tech police and city officials in Lubbock were preparing a statement Wednesday morning, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported on its online edition.

Information on the precise number of vials reportedly taken was not available.

Bubonic plague is an infectious disease of animals and humans caused by a bacterium named Yersinia pestis. People usually get it from being bitten by a rodent flea that is carrying the plague bacterium or by handling an infected animal.

The disease is treatable with antibiotics.

Suggestion to CDC....

WalMart has those accuscan theft detectors that work quite well. Time to start using those labels on Anthrax, Smallpox, Junta, Bubonic, Aids, Ebola, West Nile, and whatever other little nasties your inventory control system cannot prevent from being pilfered as a weapon to kill me!

Good Grief! Why on earth would TX Tech have plague in their possession? Here we are concerned about Iraq and some college has lax security right here in America. Wonder how many other minimum security storage areas there are??? We need to tighten our own belts here!

You know, that's a pretty good idea. Why aren't labs using a system like this to foil thieves? The cost can't be all that much or WalMart wouldn't be using the system.

It's a disease that is common among rodents. It's not a big deal anymore since we have antibiotics.

They should use some sort of magnetic labeling to heat bond a bar code to the vials for whatever is in them, and that way they couldn't be removed easily either.

Easilly defeated. Anyone sharp enough to have access to and knowledge of these labs could overcome any similar security device. China-mart catches the garden variety, trailer park style shoplifters with that system.

I love this. We know they were stolen yet we cannot prevent them from being stolen in the first place. These things never cease to amaze me.
