I lived on the Big Island 20 years ago when the current Kilauea eruption first started. Went with the kids to see it several times, completely awesome sight, especially combined with full moon, ocean, giant cliffs, and no "light pollution" since the only "city" is Hilo, miles away. All you can think about is the all-mighty power of the Supreme. And how teensy us humans really are!
If anyone wants to buy land on the Big Island it's unbelievably cheap. Of course, it might get covered by lava but it flows slowly so you'll be able to escape! Seriesly - it is very very cheap to buy there.
