Starting up a webpage?? (software vanity)

Posted on 01/18/2003 4:09:05 PM PST by KantianBurke

Hello fellow freepers. I've been reading up on HTML and other such web page goodies. To make a long story short I want to create a webpage but I was hoping that, before purchasing any software; i.e. Adobe GoLive etc, or getting a domain name someone might be able to steer me away from the junk and towards the decent markups out there. Any and all advice pertaining to beginning a webpage is welcome! Thanks guys

Cost really isn't an issue though I'd like to keep things under control. Thanks again

Whatever tools you use, start by studying tables. Tables don't have to be elaborate, they just have to be, so you can get what you want.

Hello! I hope you're not doing this for money... there's no money in making websites anymore (at least not unless you're an exceptionally great CG artist or a masterful programmer). Anyway... let's move on...

Do you have a cable or highspeed connection and not anticipating very high traffic? If so, simply download Apache and run it on a computer that will stay turned on and online at all times. Apache is really easy--all you have to do is install it, then look in the configuration file to decide which folder you want as your "website" (like, say, you have your HTML pages and images in C:\website\, you can tell Apache to point it to that. It's simpler than you think)

As for a domain name, there are plenty of cheap suppliers. I got one for $30 for two years, forgot my supplier though and I'm too lazy to do a whois on myself. Anyway, you can buy a domain name, and then pay for a subscription (usually about $30 an year or so) to have a domain forwarded to your computer's IP. Apache will automatically point requests to your website on your computer.

As for software, try doing your HTML in Textpad, which is free (of course, you should register for a mere $20 since it's a wonderful text editor). There's actually a free Photoshop wannabe called GIMP if you don't want to shell out several hundred for Photoshop--they have virtually all of the same commands... a bit less powerful, and its image scaling is a bit worse, but wonderful for most websites' needs.

Anyway, the above is the cheap version. $35 registration + 40/yr DNS forwarding = $75.to run your website for two years.

I guess I've been around here for about 5 years or so now. Time sure flies!

When Jim Robinson started this site, it was because he was fed up with the liberal media, and how they would not let people worldwide know about the corruption of the Clinton Administration. A few of us, equally concerned, (with great luck) found it fast.

In the early days, FR was a day-to-day operation, always on the brink of bankruptcy. Jim kept on, and we chipped in when it became too much. We knew how important this site was, and is. Sometimes, it came down to the wire, and we wrote checks, and sent them in, as best we could.

Look at it now. We all get our best information from this site. It is huge, with thousands of posters, and millions of readers. Yet Jim still keeps it alive because of his conviction, and he is absolutely NOT making a profit on it. He just believes. As do we.

BTW, did you know that the founder of this site is in a wheelchair (sorry Jim; I know you think it doesn't make a r*ts a$$ difference. Hey, some folks out there need to come down a peg, like I have.).

Think of it! In the darkest days of the Clinton Administration, there was a lone internet site where people with integrity, brains, and sheer gumption could discuss the dangers faced by the US. Not on CNN, for sure.

Earthmovers like Drudge, Ann Coulter, Rush, WFBuckley, his brother, Savage, Buchanan, both houses of Congress (many) check in to see what we think.

The opposition checks it out, too. Like the NY times staff, CNN, etc. Trust me, they all come here to read. Even YOUR post. You know by now how they are whining about Rush? We're next, as soon as they figure out how they can trash this site without it getting a million hits.

I've been broke; I've been not broke. I've slept in my car. I know how it feels to be squeezed tight with bills. Foks with giant bills: You're not alone, and you have friends here. :)

If you love this site as much as I do, please, please sign up for automatic payment of just $3 per month. Don't be embarrassed if you think this is too little. It absolutely is not. You $3 a month folks are our grassroots movement heroes. Be proud. We'll thank you for it, and are so glad to have you on board.

I know things are rough out there. But you are tough, and a member of the greatest grassroots freedom movement in 100 years. Together we are making history, and will change the world, as we already have. The best is yet to come. Would you please, please consider signing up for just $3 a month? Please? You will make a world of difference, to, well, the world. Be proud, and please help out!

Alot depends on what type of page you are wanting to build.
Myself, I like Homesite. I don't like the interface of GoLive or Dreamweaver.
I also think it'll be easier for a beginner, yet still has excellent capabilities should you need a program that can also handle site management.
At $99 it's also considerably cheaper. (GoLive and Dreamweaver are each $400) There's a free trial you can download to evaluate the program.

There is some info on getting started here:

http://www.varmintal.net/apage.htm

It is kind of a quick start guide to making your very own web page.

I am absolutley convinced that Fox news has a near permanent lurker. They watch for the threads that run...those same topics show up in their shows that night or the next day.

These are topics completley missed by the other networks. I won't even listen to someone who tells me otherwise. Fox monitors FR...and gets some of its story ideas from this site....no question

Again, depending on what you are looking to create, website domain registration and hosting are considerably cheaper than that. You can register for as low as $8. Hosting plans vary, based on services offered, in addition to upload space and available bandwidth.
Running a server over a cable connection, you will find is against policy, and they can terminate your account. You can run a server over a DSL connection. Make sure you do your research regarding security and other issues.

If you are wanting something simple, you can get hosting from Tracy Brant (tbrant@gryphynmedia.com) for just $24 a YEAR. That includes hosting your domain, so you don't have to worry about forwarding.

As for domain registration, check out godaddy.com. They are dirt cheap to register a domain (something like $8.95/year, $6.95 if you pay for a certain amount of years ahead of time).

Finally, I found Netscape's Composer to be EXTREMELY helpful when I first started out. You can do a wide range of stuff with it (but nothing really fancy). Generally, I start a new page in Composer, get the basic elements on there, and then edit the fancy stuff in with MS Notepad, though knowledge of HTML is needed to do so.

If you check with Tracy, let her n\know David Ware sent you (no, I don't get a kickback, but she is a friend & likes to know when I send biz to her).

Dreamweaver is a good program, but has a steep learning curve. Microsoft's FrontPage is poor.

>>...When Jim Robinson started this site...<<

Extremely well said!!

Your call to donate $3 a month is spot on. I've always waited for the quarterly fundraiser to donate but I think I'll set up a monthly schedule.

I've come here daily for years and if it weren't for FR on September 11, 2001, I'd have been completely in the dark about the events of that day. All the other news sites were jammed and the FReepers here kept all us cubicle drivers up to date.

I honestly don't know what I'd do without this place.

Are you familiar with MS Word? If so, you will love MS Frontpage. You can find it for about $100 and maybe less on at one of the online auction sites. You don't need the newest version. FrontPage 2000 is fine.

Next, get yourself CorelDraw graphics program. Very powerful and if you get one of the older version (version 8 is fine) you can pick it up for under $30.00 With this program you can manipulate photos and much more. Very worth it.

If you want to compress your pics so they don't make your web page fat and slow, get ULead Gif Animator. Use the Gif Compression feature on this program to make your pics look good and load fast.

Put your pages together on your own computer. Get everything working. Then go find yourself a place to host your domain name. Cost is about $10.00 per month for all you will need to get started.

Upload your site with CUTE FTP. A free download and then they ask for a small contribution. Or you can use Frontpage to upload.

After you upload, all of us can see your site.

Have fun!

Get "NoteTab Lite" if you want to learn as you go and know the what and why's of how html works. It's free, too.
