DNA Makes Sweet Music!
CBSNEWS.COM ^ | Jan 18, 2003 | Dr. Aurora Sanchez Sousa

Imagine the human genome as music. Unravel DNA's double helix, picture its components lined up like piano keys and assign a note to each. Run your finger along the keys.

Spanish scientists did that just for fun and recorded what they call an audio version of the blueprint for life.

The team at Madrid's Ramon y Cajal Hospital was intrigued by music's lure - how it can make toddlers dance and adults cry - and looked for hints in the genetic material that makes us what we are. They also had some microbial genes wax melodic.

The end product is "Genoma Music," a 10-tune CD due out in February. "It's a way to bring science and music closer together," said Dr. Aurora Sanchez Sousa, a piano-playing microbiologist who specializes in fungi.

Imagine the human genome as music.

In other news, James Carvile explained that the stained blue dress was actually caused by a leak from a defective MP3 player in Monica's pocket.

Jacob Obrecht obtained a melody from an existing melody by sorting the notes from longest to shortest and using that as a new melody. (The next version sorted from shortest to longest.) It doesn't lead to a bad melody if applied to "The Yellow Rose of Texas."

Thanks for the ping, Alamo-Girl and amom! Fascinating!!

I have held for many years the strong belief (No, it is stronger than 'belief'...let's call it 'notion' for lack of a better word!)...that sound is the first cause of our physical universe.

This is self-evident for those who study ancient cosmogonies such as Genesis and ancient Sanskrit scriptures. The WORD of God is demonstrated as the starting mechanism of all that we can see and experience in the matter universe.

"In the beginning was the Word...."
"In the beginning was Brahman..."
"And God said, "let there be 'Light' and there was Light..."

"And God SAID, "let there be 'Light' and there was Light..." God's means of physical creation was SOUND -- A VERBAL VIBRATIONAL COMMAND! He didnt THINK let there Light, he didnt suggest it, nor did he wish it, nor even did he feel like it....he SAID it! It was a creative act involving a VERBAL VIBRATIONAL COMMAND! or, if you will, a sound, or frequency of vibration! What is music? It is a series of ordered vibrational frequencies! Music is the absolute key to creation in the matter spheres! How can we possibly be surprised in light of this, that our DNA could be musical in that it is ordered and can be assigned frequencies which when transcribed impinge on the ear as music?

Setting all this aside, I would like to bring to this discussion thread as food for thought a couple of websites which I believe are relevant to this discussion about DNA and Music.

Hans Jenny was a Swiss researcher who devoted his life studying the effects that sound and vibrational frequencies have on matter. He would take substances and place them on a plate on which he could control the rates of vibration. He would cause selected frequencies to pass through the plate to vibrate the medium upon it. He would then photograph the shape the substance would take on as the frequency was causing it to vibrate.

Some of the images he captured are just breath-taking. There is an image I have seen which is clay being vibrated at a certain frequency. The clay has taken on the shape of cellular structures! He has taken his images and compared them to images of things you will find in nature. There are certain media, which when vibrating at particular frequencies, take on the shape of a spiral nebula. There some which look like flower petals. It is totally stunning to me to see this evidence of the truth that Sound is indeed the First Cause and the validation of what the Bible and other ancient scriptures say is the cause of the matter universe we live in.

You can find information on Hans Jenny at this web site:

http://www.cymaticsource.com/

I apologize for not putting it in link form. It has been a long time since I tried to post a link, and the little piece of paper I used to tell me how to do it went into the black hole that lives in my house!

Another site which you may find relevant to this discussion follows the work of Japanese researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto. He studies the effects that sound, words (both written and spoken) and even thoughts, and prayer have on the crystaline forms of water. His work is quite stunning as well! After looking closely at his work, you will probably not forget to bless your food and drink before partaking of a meal!

Thank you for the opportunity to share this information with you! I think you will find it worth the time to look at!

Thank you so much for all the information and links and your infectious excitement (LOL!)

In previous debates on the web, I had predicted that an algorithm would be discovered which, at the inception – the Big Bang - would give rise to the fields via harmonics, then geometry, dimensions, the particles – and of course the physical laws.

I was thrilled to discover that harmonics in the big bang have already been discovered!

Physics News 4/27/2000

BEST MAP YET OF THE COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND (CMB). The CMB is a redshifted picture of the universe at the moment photons and newly formed hydrogen atoms parted company roughly 300,000 years after the big bang. First detected in the 1960s, the CMB appeared to be utterly uniform until, eight years ago, the COBE satellite provided the first hint of slight temperature variations, on a coarse scale, with an angular resolution of about 7 degrees….

The shape of the observed pattern of temperature variations suggests that a disturbance very like a sound wave moving through air passed through the high- density primordial fluid and that the CMB map can be can be thought of as a sort of sonogram of the infant universe. (de Bernardis et al., Nature, 27 April 2000.)

Big Bang Evidence Found – 5/2/2001

“The early universe is full of sound waves compressing and rarefying matter and light, much like sound waves compress and rarefy air inside a flute or trumpet,” explained Paolo deBernardis of the University of Rome La Sapienza, one of the members of the Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics (BOOMERanG) team. “For the first time the new data show clearly the harmonics of these waves.”

Harmonics in the Early Universe – 6/5/2001

The MAXIMA, BOOMERANG, and DASI collaborations, which measure minute variations in the CMB, recently reported new results at the American Physical Society meeting in Washington, D.C. All three agree remarkably about what the “harmonic proportions” of the cosmos imply: not only is the universe flat, but its structure is definitely due to inflation, not to topological defects in the early universe.

The peaks indicate harmonics in the sound waves that filled the early, dense universe. Until some 300,000 years after the Big Bang, the universe was so hot that matter and radiation were entangled in a kind of soup in which sound waves (pressure waves) could vibrate. The CMB is a relic of the moment when the universe had cooled enough so that photons could "decouple" from electrons, protons, and neutrons; then atoms formed and light went on its way.

I found this patent application related to the subject of this thread, thought y'all would be interested:

US Patent Application

There is provided a method for determining the musical notes associated with an amino acid sequence, the musical periods of the sequence, the lengths of the notes, and the tone quality of the notes through the retroaction of the whole set of amino acids and using that information to regulate the biosynthesis of the protein. The amino acids that build a protein emit a signal of quantum nature at a certain frequency. Following the properties of this signal, the frequency is transposed into a musical note. This discovery has numerous applications since one can then deduce from the amino acid sequence of a protein a sequence of notes composing the melody that will act to stimulate or inhibit its synthesis inside an organism, wherefrom one can in addition delimit its biological functions.
