The Smell of "Proof" is in the Air

As the sand in the hourglass quickly runs out on Saddam Hussein and his Iraqi regime, there has been a growing call for President Bush to present "proof" of Iraq's violations. If Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction, where are they, and why can't we find them? Those who ask such questions do not understand the nature of the crisis with Iraq. The burden of proof does not lie with President Bush or the United States; the burden of proof lies squarely with Saddam Hussein and Iraq.
To put the issue into the proper context, it is helpful to step back in time and look at the activities of Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi government beginning with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. In addition, in order to separate the case against Iraq from the often sound bite laden exchange between U.S. "hawks" and "doves," it is helpful to examine Iraqi activities and violations through documented United Nations reports and resolutions.
The first statements from the U.N. came with U.N. Security Council Resolution 660 on August 2, 1990. Citing a breach of international peace and security, the Security Council condemned the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and demanded that Iraq withdraw immediately, and unconditionally, all its forces to the positions in which they were located on August 1, 1990. Resolution 661 followed four days later which called for an embargo of all goods into or out of Iraq. Resolution 661 also called for a cutoff of financial and economic resources to Iraq.

Check this one out. It really lays out the facts of the United Nations long ineffective history with Iraq.
How much longer should we wait?

How much longer should we wait? The calls for giving the inspectors more time is actually a call for military action to be postponed for a year, because it will soon be too hot for effective military action, but the weasels asking for more time are too dishonest to say such.

The UN is like a traffic cop on PROZAC....and just as ineffective. Saddam must go, and soon. However, I wish there was another way other than war. I just don't see an alternative avaliable at this time.

This preoccupation with the word "war" is getting on my nerves--bigtime.
When one uses "war," the immediate images are years of fighting; bodybags by the thousands; quagmire, etc.
I have ultimate faith in our president, and I do NOT for one minute believe that he will get us into a conventional, protracted "war." I am convinced that this will be swift, decisive, and intense. We will take out the power lines, invade, kill a few bad guys who are Saddam's protectors, and then Saddam will either off himself, or we capture his ass. His son, Uday, will be found in the fetal position begging for dear life.

I may be wrong, but I think Bush is holding back on the "smoking gun" evidence to surprise Iraq and maybe, more importantly, to embarrass and down right humiliate the UN into non-relevance.

I think you've got it, Bluntpoint.
Bush is a sly one, and the press/libs/elitists might be just a tad noivous today, knowing his speech will expose them all as traitorous Saddamites.

However you slice it or define it, War is a nasty business. Only those who have never seen the end results of a fire fight, artillery attack, or a bombing raid throw that word around lightly. I agree it will be fast but it will NOT be bloodless, for either side. Ponder on the impact the telegram and visit from the gentlemen in uniforms would have on a member of your family.
By the way, I'm retired Army and have driven for a few of those notifications, not a plesant duty. Nor is the sceen of a major battle.

To 5 & 6 - I believe you guys got it right - the Prez doesn't blow smoke and those that keep trying to catch him doing it end up with egg on their faces time after time. I believe we have lots of proof and are just waiting for the right time (vs letting the commie press and UN "screw the pooch") to let some of it out. Also, during/after the conflict, it will become VERY clear that Sadaam has the stuff...My prayers are that our forces don't take too much of a hit...

Why people are confused.
Is it inspections?
Iraq won't let us inspect - let's bomb them
Iraq will let us inspect - let's bomb them.
Is it nuclear bombs?
Ms Rice says it's their mushroom threat, let's bomb them
Brit Hume says since they don't have nukes, let's bomb them
Is it a civilization war?
bin Laden and Sharon say it is.
Bush says Islam is religious of peace.
Is it for oil?
Right winders say no
Left wingers say yes.
Is it for Israel?
Adelman and Gafney tell the world no
Pat Robinson says yes, Jesus must return to convert the Jews.
So are we being flim-flamed?
No, Powell has the answer, it's Iraq's paperwork.
Call the SEC auditors then bomb Enron.

That is why people are confused alright, but let me cut through the issues for you.
Iraq has supported terrorism. They support Al Quaida, they were involved in the TWA 800 bombing, the OKC bombing, the first World Trade Center bombing, 9-11 and Saddam openly braggs about providing funding for suicide bombers against Israel.
So, It's not about inspections or paperwork because Iraq is an issue whether or not they have WMD. It's not about nukes, but certainly that's a concern. Saddam want's it to be a civilization war, but it doesn't matter whether it is or not. It's not about oil, if Saddam wasn't a terrorist state, we wouldn't care. Its's not specifically about Israel, although the terrorism directed towards Israel is the easiest to point out the proof of, because of Saddam's open bragging.

I have no doubt that there is proof, no doubt of our winning the war, no doubt of the commitment and dedication of our troops. NOW LET'S GET MOVING BEFORE THE ANTI-WAR CROWD GETS TOO BIG A FOOT-HOLD AND THE MARKET GOES TO 6,000 AND BUSH GOES BELOW 50%.
