"I say that because, for us "old folks" who were actually taught American History in school, a thriving democracy depends upon universal education – an education that prepares the citizens of a nation to govern themselves through their elected representatives.

Then there are some of us really 'older folks' who were NOT taught that we lived in a 'thriving democracy' -- one where 51 percent of the population could steal the labors of the other 49 percent through their elected representatives. The only 'democracy' we knew of was where a majority vote was needed to decide what color to paint the 'White House' and the Halls of Congress. Self-government was in vogue long before we had 'elected representatives.'

But what a boon it has been, as we progressed as a civilized and democracized society and began to allow our elected representatives to remove our terribly heavy burden of self-responsibility and self-government. I feel so much ....uh.....freer....and....uh...richer.
