Ping - if you want on or off my ping list drop me a freepmail (and if you did and I forgot to take you off my apologies, I consolidated lists and accidentally had a few names on twice - my humblest apologies if you were mistakenly pinged!)

In 1996 a Unocal executive, told wire agencies that the pipeline project would be easier to implement now that the Taliban had captured Kabul. The statement was retracted but the damage was done. Unocal’s gaffes and the confusion in the State Department only further convinced Iran, Russia, the CARs, and the anti-Taliban alliance and most Pakistanis and Afghans that the US-Unocal partnership was backing the Taliban and wanted an all-out Taliban victory.

As we say on FR - Interesting...

I don't know. I'm not so sure it was the CIA that spawned the fundamentalists groups in Afghanistan. I think OBL spawned them as a reaction to increased western presence in the region ( because of the pipeline)

Interesting : I posted a review of this book about 2 weeks ago and got FLAMED because I dared to report that both Republican and Democrat administrations had screwed up - and screw up they did !! We sent Billions of dollars to these people - trusting Pakistan to administer the funds. The Saudis, who had Wahabi Muslim ( Islamic fundamentalists who are virtual twins to the Taliban ) cells operating in Pakistan and Afghanistan , matched the billions we supplied.
