Mike,
I am a Chemical Engineering grad. student. Our Transport teacher challenged us to see if we could come up with an approach to calculate a theoretical steady state temperature of a space shuttle upon re-entering in the upper atmosphere. I was searching the web for any thing I could find when I ran across your post. As this is not my area of expertise, I am having a bit of trouble getting started.

I'm sure that this is too simplistic, but here is where I'm at. I'm assuming that at ~7km/sec the air is being compressed adiabatically thus spiking the temp. Also, I have to account for the radiation heat loss as well as forced convective heat losses. After this I am lost. Can you offer any help?

You remembered. I heard this mentioned once this morning on the news, but that was it.

It's time to get back on the horse that bucked you off. Space will always be a dangerous business, but so is driving your car(or van).

Amen my FRiend, Amen!!!

Just hope they got rid of the AlGore foam off the fuel tank.

BTW your right about the risks, You and I and others take a risk every day driving to work. However, I just don't think about it when I'm on the road. Just have to do the job, like those who are now with God.

Of course thiers was a lot more dangerous.

May they rest in peace!!

It's always chilling to go back and read these "as it happened" threads here on FR.

Yes it is. Sometimes I'll go through one of the 9/11 threads, there are a snap shot in time.

It is a day that is forever etched in my memory.

However, for me, I think the 9-11 threads are the most compelling

We may already know the reason.

You posted this within an hour or so of the accident. I just posted a link on Redstate.COM to this thread as part of a discussion of the Challenger accident and related incidents. My exact comment was:

(this) is one of the most incredible and important documents ever put on the web. Live posts told the tale, minute by minute. Minutes before the news media broke in people were posting things that let you know this wasn't likely to end well. Live links to the weather radar (for God's sake) actually showed the debris field as it happened.

I had forgotten your post and that you had nailed the cause of this tragedy so precisely within minutes.

I repeat, this is one of the most important documents ever put on the web.

And the world changed, again.

I just posted something I'd had seen that seemed logical.

This was a live report.

It wasnt a glow that spread back like a comet but it must have been "on fire" because it was bright and big.
