Just heard on the news that the Joint Chiefs are in some sort of "Domestic Events" meeting.

Does that mean that they think the possibility of terrorism has at least to be considered? Would they have that kind of meeting if it was clearly just an accident?

Also, if that present tense, "are", is accurate, it's very interesting they were able to get them all together on a Saturday morning (unless, of course, they were all together anyway, because of the Blair visit and war planning.)

You are correct regarding Columbia. Columbia's designation is OV-102. It is the oldest vehicle in the fleet and the heaviest.

I know; we certainly have our hands full right now. Prayers for our leaders and the families of shuttle members.

"I don't know what's worse: terrorists or NASA screwing up. I know this was the oldest shuttle in the fleet and things can happen even with the best of intentions, but if NASA screwed up again... "

It could be that NASA scewed up. We will know eventually but NASA has been beating the statistical predicted failure of a shuttle for quite a while now. Contrary to someone else's observation on this thread the shuttle is an engineering marvel. It is, however, very complex and expensive. Recent forays into a next generation vehicle has been haltingly maddening to us who have been involved in such endeavors. This will provide the impetus to develop a safer and cheaper manned launch vehicle.

For now our thoughts should be with the friends and family of the crew and all those dedicated workers who have had a hand in this launch and now recovery operations. It is going to be difficult not to respond emotionally in the early days of many months of work that lies ahead.

Though I have no evidence, my personal opinion is that this is a case of sabotage. Specifically terrorism.
The fact that the first Israeli astronaut was aboard is too telling and is not a coincidence.

Oh, my ! That is scary. I hope it's not. Our world has definitely changed since 9-11 !

I live north of Dallas and heard booms when this is supposed to have happened. Sounded like someone drove into my garage door, and my dog ran to the front door. I looked out both and saw nothing. May be just coincdence, but this is all overwhelming.

If you are anywhere near the debris track, don't touch any of it! Not only should it be best preserved for evidence, we have NO IDEA what was on board. We know about the scientific experiements, but it is routine to do classified projects on the shuttle. If there were bacteria, etc., one would hope that it was "autoclaved" on the way down, but at this point we can't be sure.

Stay safe, Freepers, and prayers.

You're no better, insinuating that Tom Daschle will be happy with this and seeing it as a political advantage.

President Bush must be wondering what he got himself into. He has seen more tragedy in 2 years than most Presidents see in 2 full terms.

Hey Ivan,

And the idiots on DUhhh are already saying Bush will use this tragedy to "Comfort the people just to get his positives higher".

Why we're not supposed to out these bastards is beyond me...

I thought they said on Fox that this problem was on take off two weeks ago...some insulation material came off but NASA said that were good to go.

Adding my prayers. This is awful. Challenger's anniversary was just 4 days ago.

Thanks. I'd already figured by now that I didn't hear correctly since they didn't mention it again, but your explanation helps.

I feel so bad for the families. They were so close to being home.

Thanks Ron, handsome people doing what they loved.

It won't be long, however, that we'll be back up there. The Intl Space Station requires resupply and crew changes. Between the USA and Russia, we must care for that crew on station now...God Bless America

Jim Lovell (Apollo 13) on Sky News - says it could be an explosion rather than a breakup in flight.
