No, the best we can hope is that they can somehow emerge from the wreckage and get out... but the tumble on the command module could be huge.

I don't know how fast they were going at 200,000 feet.

if they have been able to get out...

Not possible at 207K feet. Primary radar contact was lost which indicates the orbiter disintegrated.

Does anyone know if they give the astronauts parachutes?

At Mach 15 and 200,000 feet, your ship coming apart, no parachute is going to help.

My thoughts are with the men/women and their families.

NASA Loses Communication with Shuttle Ahead Landing
Sat February 1, 2003 09:27 AM ET
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - The U.S. space agency NASA said it lost contact with the space shuttle minutes before a scheduled landing on Saturday as it crossed the United States with seven astronauts on board.

The shuttle's landing was overdue after it was planned to arrive at the Kennedy Space Center at 9:16 a.m. EST. NASA officials lost contact with the orbiter at about 9 a.m.

Columbia was 25 years old, and carrying a 40,000 lb. spacelab. Inflight breakup is the most likely scenario.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth.
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings,
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind swept heights with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
And, while with silent, lifting mind i've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I'm sick. I watched the Challenger from Dick Scobee's son's squadron at the Air Force Academy. This sucks.

Hate to say it, but cnn has better coverage than fox.

CNN always has better coverage than FOX on ANYTHING to do with real news. The first thing I did was switch from FOX to CNN.

Not "Sad to say"...FOX needs to know this. They are seriously lacking on real news coverage...Not even CLOSE to CNN.
