Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance

Sat February 1, 2003 02:08 PM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that its was God's retribution on Americans. "We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said.

"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.

Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up shortly before its return to earth.

"Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason (in 1981), now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said.

but why is Iraq not a sheet of glass right now? Anybody?

because we are a dignified people ... if Saddam or OBL or Yasser Arafat had their finger on a nuclear button, God only knows (and most of us can guess) what level of destruction they are capable of ...

America rises to tragedy and loss ... we will get past this day, never forgetting our heroes, and we will build the next generation of space shuttles, God wiling ...

>>It's possible to read joyful's comment two ways. Reconsider the context. <<

I don't think so. It is just like Pat Robertson after 9/11. We never had any specific exemption from the world as a result of God's largesse -- but the idea that this tragedy is a result of some sort of aggregated sins of the US is insulting to the memories of those recently departed brave souls and repulsive in the extreme.

I'm sure they hadn't considered that theory yet.

Seriously, it is wacked out posts like that which end up being reported in the mainstream press as somehow being typical thought at FR. It's an embarrassment.

RE: post #87

If you are going to put things into correct perspective by quoting the Son of God, all these nominal Christians won't have anything left to argue about. That passage is the pertinent one for today, BTW, so I thank you for using it.

They Iraqis should read Jesus.

"The tower of Siloam that fell....were they worse sinners?"

"The rain falls on the just and the unjust alike."

Heck, some of the "Christians" on this thread should read Jesus' words.

Are you nuts? It is NOT a minority over there -- I checked it within minutes of when I knew -- the minority who called for compassion and sympathy were attacked unmercifully bu the majority.

We are understantably angry at the absolutley inhuman reaction to a very human tragedy. Iraq, DU, Palestine (I am waiting for that) -- this is a case of brave souls pushing the envelope of human experience and knowledge to make a better future dying in a terrible, terrible accident -- anyone who applauds such an incident is a valid and appropriate target of scorn, derision and understandable righteous indignation.

Liberal apologist!

Is this any less than what we expected out of them? People that think this way are to be pittied. In the end, they will be held responsible for their actions. Our lost souls are beyond reach of these words now. Nothing that can be said will prevent them from being pioneers of space and national heros for hundreds if not thousands of years.

When we had that bad earthquake in Turkey, the zealots called it a punishment from God.

I suppose, if they meant that the extensive damage was the natural end result of carelessness, then they might have been right, but that's not how they meant it of course.

When we kill the innocent (babies) do we expect smiles, protection and blessings from God? NO

This is just a disaster and I don't think this is the hand of God.
But what I agreed with the other Freeper on was that we probably lost our umbrella of protection from God due to our national behavior.
Remember that God before walked his people through SAND for 40 years till a whole generation died when God was mocked.
When we destroy His creation, do we expect no punishment?

But I would not say this exact issue is the hand of God Chad.

Saddam, we are coming for you. You will rue the day you were born. Perhaps we will turn you over to your own people,...

You know, that's a really good idea! That way he doesn't die as a martyr at the hands of America and our alies, but at the hands of his own oppressed people. Great idea!!! Talk about losing honor in the eyes of the Arab world!!

There are always people on the fringe who think we deserved it for one reason or another but there also seems to be a more general conversion of grief emotion into anger. I would love to find a good reason to attack Iraq, but "they were gloating" is propagandistic at best.

Other than that idiot Joyful here, I haven't seen any of those and I certainly join you in the sickening feeling if that is the reaction anywere here at FR. I was staying with the original 2,000+ post and saw only compassion, tears, some good scientific analysis, and angry reactions from those of us who checked over at DU and were amazed at the evil which lurks there.

Sometimes it is hard to tell the extreme Right from the Islamofascists from the moderate (much less extreme) Left.
