Officials Eye Columbia's Last Overhaul
This story hasn't gotten much traction on FR, but I think it is important to realize that the leading edges of Columbia's wings were modified somehow at Palmdale two flights back. I am very interested in finding out 1. Why a modification was required, and 2. What exactly was done.
Among the modifications to NASA's oldest shuttle were increased protection from space debris and enhanced heat protection for the leading edges of the wings.

The "only" problem was back in 1988 ... an Aerospace Mechanical Engineer ... at the New Orleans Michoud Facility ... collected data from 30 External Tanks that had been built ...
and discovered and then ACCURATELY PREDICTED to Martin-Marietta Aerospace ... and NASA ...
that someday "weak" SOFI foam would fall from an External Tank during a Space Shuttle launch phase ...
DAMAGE the CERMAMIC TILES on the Orbiter's underside ...
resulting in the Orbiter's fiery DESTRUCTION upon re-rentry ...
