  Course: HST 202: United States History

  Course Catalog Description: History of the United States together with state and local materials from the Reconstruction (1865) to present. Emphasis on the political, social, cultural and economic trends and events which have molded and characterized America as a modern nation and world power. Meets the U.S. History and Institutions requirement for graduation.

  Required? Met a General Ed./diversity/other requirement with a few course options.

  Lecture Bias: Excessive

  Comments: The instructor chose selected news stories to discuss every class period, but made sure that they were all about the L.A.P.D. using excessive force or any other story he could find attacking a white politician. Although current events did not take up a significant amount of class time, they were never related to historical events. Most of them were from independent radical newspapers protesting war, capitalism, or anything else usually associated with the conservative population. Whenever a student tried to speak of another issue, the discussion was ended. A major point is when discussing the Zoot Suit Riots of Los Angeles. First-hand accounts were presented that depicted the Zoot Suiters as a violent gang who robbed and beat people up. The instructor dismissed this first-hand testimony as well as others as being lies from white men. He claims the Zoot Suits as well as other gangs are just trying to protect themselves from the white people.

  Discussion Bias: Excessive

  Comments: The discussions were biased because the instructor was the only one talking. He spent class time "preaching" to us about such topics as crack should be decriminalized, and on several occasions praised gang members and graffiti writers as "visionaries" or just expressing themselves. The majority of the class were first time freshmen and were obviously intimidated by the new college experience. After speaking to some outside class, they acknowledged that they were refraining from opposing the instructor for fear of negative repercussions.

  Readings Bias: Excessive

  Comments: Our required readings included "A People's History of the U.S." by Howard Zinn; "City of Quartz" by Mike Davis and selected short stories by Langston Hughes. Although popular, the Zinn book definitely has a left slant. The Davis text is absolutely absurd. The book should have been renamed "I hate Los Angeles." It was full of attacks on pioneers of L.A. as well as current politicians in Los Angeles. Further research by myself turned up several news articles pointing out many of the lies and blatant exaggerations used in the book.

  General Comments: This class was not about the history of the United States. The whole class was taught as a history of minorities in the United States and how all their pain was caused by white people. Instead of following the description of the course provided in the course catalog, the instructor's lectures provided a very narrow view of American history post civil war. Instead of incorporating major events such as the world wars, the course was entirely devoted to the oppression that minorities experienced. This type of lesson plan is better suited to an ethnic studies class, not a general education history class.

Sorry Doug, but I don't get your point - other than a state university education isn't worth the money spent on it.

Hillsdale College in Michigan doesn't accetpt ANY federal money whatosever and has a conservative, i.e., accurate and non-revisionist, liberal arts curriculum. Does is cost more? Yes, but they have their own loan programs.

I had an American Studies professor who was quite partial to social programs, although in a subtle way, never overly blatant. One time there was a discussion about welfare and I, as well as someone else, voiced some objections about it, he was none to pleased about it. But he'd be very conservative compared to this Dolinar guy, and he never "punished" my differences with him with a unjustified bad grade, I know for a fact some professors do that.

The point of this series is to out these professors who are not teaching, but rather using their position so spread a far left ideology and stifle discussion. Perhaps shining light on these cockroaches will eventually lead to some change. Taxpayers should be p*ssed that their money is going to fund this stuff.

This happens all over. My niece was given a c at richard Bland College in Virginia by a Jamaican "Profgessor" because she wrote a paper describing what she had learned from the class. The guy did not have a text and simply ranted all period about his personal likes and dislikes. The major requirement of the course, a survey course of sociology, was to write a paper stating what you had learned in the course and all points of view received equal credit. My niece did just that veru politely and articulately and compared what was covered with the syllabus from a nearby university. She received an F. Another black student who scrawled "It was good." received an A. This is egregious in the fact that this kind of propaganda and blatant coercion takes place in every education institution in the nation.

howard zitt's history of the united states is written thru' the rear view mirror. he blames people in the past for not knowing and taking into account what he knows now in the present.

mike davis' city of quartz made me wanna puke. same technique as howard's. it's a very angry book. if davis had his way, los angeles and california would not have been populated.

davis returned to his native san diego several years ago. also, he won a macarthur fellowship of several hundred thousand dollars.
