Capt. Kent Rominger - Chief of Astronauts, speaking about them individually, telling funny little anecdotes about them. Some laughter, wonderful remarks.
To: cyncooper
Captain Rominger is eloquent and touching. Just compare this with the Dem Wellstone memorial.

It would be unconstitutional to keep them from being astronauts. It's their choice to do it. We don't force them.
To: Howlin
You know, THIS is how to conduct a memorial service.

President Bush and first lady Laura Bush leave
the White House on their way to today's memorial
service in Houston.
Here is an excerpt from the article posted on FR:
Nation honors fallen crew
02/04/2003
From Staff and Wire Reports
President Bush and first lady Laura Bush traveled to Houston Tuesday to lead the nation in mourning the seven Columbia astronauts at a private memorial service at NASA headquarters.
The astronauts' family members were being joined by an estimated 10,000 space agency employees, who paused from their work to attend. Also on hand: former President Bush, Gov. Rick Perry, John Glenn, the first American in orbit, and Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon.
In his remarks, President Bush was expected to pay tribute to the seven astronauts and renew America's commitment to the manned space program. "It will be a comfort to the families and the nation and it will be a rededication to the mission of space exploration," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said.
The president was expected to meet privately with the families of the Columbia astronauts after the ceremony.
NASA estimated the crowd gathering in a plaza known at the Mall here at between 10,000 and 15,000. Mourners spilled beyond the square and crowded around a pond. They stood among the trees and on the lawns -- waiting to hear the presidential eulogy.

Parents have taken place in every risky endeavor our nation has undertaken, from the exploration of the west, to the New England whalers and trading ships, to the battles in all our wars.
Those with children sometimes have more of a stake in the nation's future. I don't think being an astronaut is "self-actualization."
To: Howlin
What an absolutely poigniant memorial service.
I stand in awe of the families who are undergoing such stress, and hold the courage of the astronauts in the highest regard.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

It's really a beautiful ceremony...the little stories of each astronaut make it all the more special.

I hope they sing the airmen's verses to 'Eternal Father Strong to Save'.
'Lord guard and guide the men who fly through the great spaces in the sky...'
'Aloft in solitude of space uphold them with Thy saving grace...'

Husband used to say that "he feels more like he does now than he did before." That was a personal statement in our family. He quoted Joshua. "Be strong and of good courage."

Is it just me, or is anybody else constantly surprised at how much religion is woven into the daily lives of all these people? And in "government" work?

I'm struck by the number of young children as well. However, many more children lose a parent to disease or accident than by dying in the space program. You would have to eliminate all of our military personnel as well, since going to war is inherently dangerous.

United States Navy Band Sea Chanters singing "Eternal Father."
