WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush maintains his strong approval rating in Missouri and Illinois, while most of his potential Democratic challengers in 2004 are fighting to become known, according to a poll taken for the Post-Dispatch.
Among the Democratic hopefuls, Rep. Richard Gephardt of St. Louis County enjoys strong favorable ratings in his party in both states, which will be important as candidates jockey in presidential primaries a year from now.

Missouri SHOW ME state, understands what has been shown.
Missouri with a democrat governor, needs to keep focus on stopping VOTE FRAUD. It is time right now to demand that elections are free from VOTE FRAUD in 2004.
Go Bush!
To: cardinal4
What a bunch of crap about Gephardt! Local KC political reporter Steve Kraske was on CNN with Novak and Press and they asked him about Gephardt winning a statewide race in Missouri. Kraske said, and rightly so, that Gephardt might as well be from Ohio on the westside and rural areas of the state because he is a nonentitity outside his little union controlled area of south St. Louis. I seriously think that Gephardt would have a hard time winning this state from Bush.
To: Just mythoughts
Correct. Saint Louis was one of the cities where Democratic voting irregularities occured. Holden and Carnahan in the same year, yuk!

I seriously think that Gephardt would have a hard time winning this state from Bush. The unions here in STL will back Gephart. The Union vote is big here because of Boeing, Ford, Chrysler, etc. In a depressed economy the candidiates who sound the most plausible about creating jobs or preserving them, will get the votes.Even if they lie. The only thing that got Gephart reelected last time was convincing congress to contiue building F-15s (or was it -18s?)here in STL. Just my opinion, but I do agree, that outside STL, voters will probably be firmly in W's corner.

That tracks with national figures; a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll this week [early Feb 03] showed 68 percent of Americans have a favorable view of Bush. I must have missed the headlines about Bush's popularity peaking. :-)

At least there were enough Republicans in the St. Louis area to create a stir, In KC there are no Republicans to even know when there is VOTE FRAUD.

Right now, but I still think It will be gephart in Iowa. Upper Crust New England vs. Homeboy should tip it in G's favor. Just my opinion.

I thought Kerry (Kohn?) was tops among Iowa Dem's... There was a poll yesterday which showed them in a dead heat in Iowa. Surprising to me, since I expect Dick Gephard to win that state. But Kerry's also been the one making the headlines and big push. I imagine Dickie G is working more behind the scenes.

Sure they will. But Jim Talent won last November and I am pretty sure that nary a union member in St. Louis voted for him.

Sure they will. But Jim Talent won last November and I am pretty sure that nary a union member in St. Louis voted for him.Good point. I live in neighborhood north of the city. It is comprised of mostly Boeing Machinists, Auto assemblers, etc. These people are middle class and can live in these neighrborhoods because of unions. Up until about 10 years ago, you could still make 6 figures around here without a High School Diploma. Gephart knows this and spends all of his time here courting the IAM and UAW. I hadnt thought, however, about about the disparity presented my the midterms. And this post is by know means a slam on machinists, assemblers etc.

He is kinda strange looking. And rather monotone. He's got time to work on it, but IMHO he's hardly impressive in public appearances.

cardinal4, your take on North St. Louis County is pretty much on target.
Gephardt has to win more than just the St. Louis and K.C. areas to carry Mo. agaist Bush in 2004.
BTW, I am one of those machinist who voted against Gore, Carnahan, Holden, and Carnahan and there are more of us than you think.
I think Matt Blunt, Sec. of State of Mo. did a good job in 2002 to limit the voter fraud problem.
