Suggestions for a 72 hour kit
2/11/2003 | Important vanity

Posted on 02/11/2003 8:58:10 AM PST by Utah Girl

Since the alert level is now high, and there have been many articles and TV blurps about preparedness, I thought I would post suggestions for a 72 hour kit. I keep mine in my front hall closet of my home.

A lot of the stuff was lying around the house, I didn't buy hardly anything new. I did buy a solar, battery operated radio from Radio Shack for ten dollars. Here is the total list in one spot. I probably spent under 25 dollars for my kit, but I am single without children. The most money was buying the stuff for the first aid kit. One extra thing I threw in the first aid kit is four sanitray napkins. They work really well for compressing against a bleeding wound that needs to be staunched. I also store my sleeping bag and blanket right next to the 72 hour kit. I still use the sleeping bag when I go camping, so I didn't buy another one.

This 72 hour kit should meet the needs of your family. Use ready to eat foods your family will eat and hobbies and entertainment your family likes to do. Include individual medication as required by your family members. Whatever container is used should be portable. I use two duffel bags.

"only jarred sauerkraut in my house now." Thanks for the tip on acidic food..

Johnny 7, you did that too eh? I felt that if i wasn't prepared, my kids could have suffered..so just in case I did buy extra supplies and water. What if something did happen..I might not have been able to take care of the kiddos. WHile it was pathetic that the rumors caused some people to spend way too much money..I'm glad it made me aware of "being prepared" for emergencies. Of course our big ice storm confirmed that notion.

Xenalyte said: Many on here will consider this a stupid question, but is there a place to get gas masks for pets? We have three cats and a short-muzzled Boston terrier, and they are indeed our babies.

arm958 responded: It's not a stupid question. After all, you can't eat them if they've been contaminated.

LOL........I think it deserves a laugh anyway. Thanks for the good chuckle. ;)

Or I can give you a list of my neighbors who have guns and who will die protecting their food storage. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm in trouble if I have to start carrying more than five gallons of water.

Thanks for all the good information. When I heard John Ashcroft say he kept three days of supplies in the event of an emergency I knew it was not a bad idea for all of us.

The list contains things we should have at the ready anyway. We all are too complacent about things happening and take so much in our lives for granted.

I live a short distance from where most of the space shuttle came down and until that happened we had never thought about the danger of pieces of metal the size of a car coming from the sky. Certainly a miracle that no one on the ground was hurt when you consider the number of pieces.

I have a windup radio that also uses batteries, but I think I will get the Baygen flashlight too. Great idea.

Yes, I thought it just a good suggestion to be prepared. Many people don't realize just how close to the edge they live, and in case of emergencies, stores won't always be there, fully stocked.

Your most glaring omission is some means of defending yourself.

I was talking with my father this morning and he said that the type of plasic sheeting you buy makes a huge difference. He's been in the flexible film industry for 30 years and he said that some of the material that has been recommended won't do anything to protect or seal a room from chemicals. It depends if the sheeting has a barrier or not. If there is no barrier in the film, then the chemicals will pass right through. Be careful what you choose.

I'm going to talk to him later today to see if he can make any suggestions.

Many other people has made that suggestion also. The list is flexible, I support the 2nd amendment, but don't want guns in my house. Just my own personal choice.

Wait. You mean if I break in to steal food, I have to leave my gun outside?

You forgot weapons, guns, knives, etc. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised to see attempted looting.

The Baygen power supplies are great. Electricity has got to come from somewhere, after all...

Serious question: Where can someone acquire an M-16 or AK-47 and are they significantly cheaper than rifles available at, say, Bass Pro Shop?

Is it the ammo that's the deal clincher? Is it more readily available? What? Semi-auto? Large capacity mags? Can you still get those?

Wouldn't someone interested only in keeping what's theirs in an ugly post-attack environment be better off with a standard pump action Mossberg shotgun?

I mean every one of those questions sincerly and without any sarcasm or malice.
