Has anyone bought plastic and tape as mentioned by Tom Ridge. I am sure some hard core Freepers already have it, left over from Y2K. I remember reading stories how the Israelis had all this stuff at the ready.

Bingo! I haven't lived without duct tape for 25+ years. There's a small roll in the trunk, a roll in the garage, and a roll in the basement. Also in the basement is a roll of serious high-speed tape (real, foil duct tape).

In a bad attack, take your plastic bag, put it over your head, and wrap duct tape around your neck. This whole thing is the modern equivalent of "duck and cover".

Being "prepared" by being panicked by stupid suggestions coming from the government is boneheaded. If you think that putting duct tape over the cracks in your windows and doors is going to protect you from chemical and biological warfare agents, then you are not prepared; you are a bonehead. The threat is real whether you want to believe it or not.
Not all parts of the country have the same degree of threats of terrorism as does NYC and DC.

If something happened and you were not 'Warned', would you be one of the first to Shout: "When did they know and why didn't they warn us?"

It's not an alert to Panic..it is an alert to stay Aware should you live in certain areas. This "sense of awareness" will become second nature, I am afraid,as we learn to live in a terrorist world.

Duct Tape and Plastic could also be used for body bags in the event of a massive disaster but using them to seal your house would be a waste of time.

Based on winds and location my house ( less then 2 miles from the tracks) was smack dab in the "Red" zone. That means dead. No evacuation, no nothing, just dead. So sheltering in place for a couple of hours doesn't strike me as a ridiculous alternative. Anyone who lives within a couple of miles of train tracks, or an industrial park, or a big public swimming pool or water treatment plant etc etc, get my message?

Just got a couple of rolls from Wal*Borg. My dog chewed a huge roll we had, so we needed to re-supply. I did feel silly though. I didn't see anyone else buying any. I also bought those emergency rain ponchos for 87 cents each. I use them for k-9 search and rescue. I thought that if I did need it for windows, it would work really well.

I first heard that joke in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism, the medieval recreation group). We use a lot of duct tape in the SCA, which ironic considering the group's purpose, but duct tape is the perfect thing for covering a rattan sword, or for repairing the edging on a shield or for holding bits of broken armor together....

For what it's worth - using plastic sheeting and duct tape is pretty standard defense against airborn poison and radiactive dust. From what I've read, using it to create in home shelters is SOP in Israel where they've been worried about this for sometime.

The fallout from a "dirty" bomb is going to be primarily dust laced with plutonium - an alpha particle emitter. Alphas are big and slow and can be stopped with just about anything - but you really don't want them inside you.

The idea of sheeting and tape to seal up a room or two inside the house until the dust cloud disperses makes a lot of sense. I think it's called "shelter in place". You might try searching the Internet for that term.

I'm more concerned that goverment is finally talking about the specifics of the threat. I'm getting increasingly worried. I spent the morning talking to my sister on her cell-phone while she went shopping to pick up some plastic drop cloths and a couple of rolls of duct tape. She has four little kids. (She picked up some extra water jugs and and flashlights as well. If nothing else, we're going to have a great time camping this summer.)

She said no one else was buying anything like that today - but people were sure paying attention to CNN on the TV in the store.

Duct tape? Being from the South, I fully realize that ANYTHING can be fixed with duct tape, but I hadn't been aware that ANYTHING can be prevented with duct tape also.

What am I suppposed to ascertain about the threat, if all the information I have is 'be aware' and 'get some duct tape'. Is Ridge trying to tell America that terrorists will blow up all US fastener factories? Then the duct tape thing would make perfect sense.

Three years ago I had the choice of either removing the radiator from a 1987 Suburban to solder the overflow line to the neck or use JB Weld. The JB Weld is still holding fine.

Thanks for the name-callin' my friend. I am not saying that you run out and stockpile duct tape. I am not running out to buy anything. Seems you are so upset over the warnings, that you seem to be showing signs of fear turned toward anger. Bush is caught between Iraq and a hard place. You keep people informed and go about your daily routine, but you stay alert..and you let the terrorists know the Alert is out. Duct tape the screen on your tv...will keep you uninformed 24/7.

Normally, I would agree with you. The entire concept of Obergruppenfuhrer Ridge and his Department of Love gives me the willies, though his color-coded charts are downright silly. Any warnings which are general enough to be shotgunned nationwide lack any useful specificity and are completely worthless, and sound more like CYA than useful intelligence.

In this case, however, the "duct tape and plastic" remark has a tinge of practicality for people in certain locations. If I lived east (downwind) of New York City or Washington, DC, duct tape and plastic might provide effective protection in the event of airborne fallout from a "dirty" bomb. That and some rain. But I doubt that folks in Bumfart, Mississippi should be overly concerned.

Here in Georgia, duct tape holds together our cars, plumbing, boots, cracked windows, etc.

In other words, good defense against the kinds of weapons terrorists are least likely to have. The only protection against modern chemical and biological agents is complete airtight protection and air recirculation; in other words, a full body suit and gas mask, or a sealed residence with some kind of air filtration system.

Otherwise, if you can seal off the air in your house enough to protect yourself, you will also suffocate. The only real prepardness in that case would be to have a real shelter with air filtration. Otherwise, the only option is to get out of the affected area, if possible.

Not that I believe these "warnings"; just as the Dems play politics with foreign policy, so do the Republicans. Bush's administration has been milking 911 for all it's worth. Giving endless scare-mongering but useless "warnings" serves to ratchet up the tension and to keep people convinced that war abroad and a police state at home are the only options left to them.
