COLLEGE BLASTED FOR INVITING 'ECO-TERRORISTS'(FRESNO)
Family.org ^ | Feb. 10, 2003 | Terry Phillips

Posted on 02/11/2003 3:09:07 PM PST by madfly

Rather than simply studying the phenomenon of "revolutionary environmentalism," a California university has asked former "eco-terrorists" to address its students.

An upcoming event at California State University, Fresno, is called "revolutionary environmentalism." But instead of studying the topic, the school has invited the "revolutionaries" to speak.

Another word for the past actions of some of the conference invitees is "eco-terrorism."

"One of the participants, Paul Watson, said that there's nothing wrong with being a terrorist, as long as you win," said Doug Heye, spokesman for U.S. Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Calif.

Pombo says it's outrageous that the university is playing host to such a crew.

"Not only is the university hosting them, but they're paying their expenses to get there," Heye added. "And that's our taxpayer dollars."

The conference began to draw fire from the Center for Consumer Freedom shortly after it was announced. David Martosko, of the group, said the event is labeled an academic exercise.

"For a public university to invite these people to campus on the public's dime, and then try to dress it up like an academic exercise, is absolutely unconscionable," Martosko said.

University spokesman, Mark Aydelotte said the intent of the conference is to study the activists and their motivations.

"The professor's particular interest in this case was to learn more (about) these specific groups and ... why they've chosen this violent direct-action mode," Aydelotte said.

One of the violent activists, Rodney Coronado, spent four years in prison for fire-bombing a lab at Michigan State University. Heye scoffs at the idea of studying Coronado and his kind.

"These people are not advocating recycling drives," Heye said. "They are talking about arson and tree spiking, and they're hurting people."

The university has decided to close the conference and make it an invitation-only affair. The public closure of the conference and tighter security are blamed on the media's "hostile characterization" of the gathering.

The conference, titled "Revolutionary Environmentalism: A Dialogue Between Activists and Academics," is scheduled for Feb. 13-14.

GO POMBO!

Here's an email I received from the House Resource Committee today.

Pombo Comments on Fish and Wildlife Service Decision Regarding the California Spotted Owl

FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
CONTACT: Doug Heye - 202.225.1947
Monday, February 10, 2003
Tracey Shifflett - 202.226.9019

House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo commented on the decision today by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that the California spotted owl does not warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act.

"Basing the decision on the best scientific information available, the Fish and Wildlife Service determined that the California spotted owl was neither endangered nor threatened," Chairman Pombo stated. This should be good news for everyone involved - most especially the California spotted owl, a healthy species which exists in great numbers."

"We need to continue to work on a legislative solution with George Miller, Nick Rahall and others to guarantee that these decisions are made in the best interest of our nation's wildlife," he added.

The study, mandated by a Federal court order to be determined by today's date, consisted of a 12 month review of all scientific and commercial information available, as required by the Endangered Species Act.

The California spotted owl, one of three subspecies of spotted owls, is currently recognized as a sensitive species by U.S. Forest Service. The California Department of Fish and Game lists the California spotted owl as a species of special concern.

Makes me want to open a Spotted Owl Cafe near EBUCK's billboards, and serve grilled chicken breasts from a "spot-fire grill" and call em "Grilled Spotted Owl Breasts", all you can eat!! Sorry, no greens on the menu!

About two years ago, an environmental group on my campus (Virginia Tech) invited Craig Rosebraugh to be a guest speaker on campus. He used to be the media spokesperson for the E.L.F.

If you want to see the garbage that he was promoting, check out the ELF's website. He is no longer listed as the spokesperson, but you can see some of the terrorist actions that they claim responsibility for. http://www.earthliberationfront.com/main.shtml

These people scare me, they hate America as much or worse than OBL et. al., and they are already here.

Gee ecoterroists for a collegial academic conference and anti-war organizations running seminars in public schools.

The Bay area needs an enema....unfortunately I think it would enjoy it too much.

from Here

Environments conducive to the rise of terrorism include international and national environments, as well as subnational ones such as universities, where many terrorists first become familiar with Marxist-Leninist ideology or other revolutionary ideas and get involved with radical groups. Russell and Miller identify universities as the major recruiting ground for terrorists...

The physiological approach to terrorism suggests that the role of the media in promoting the spread of terrorism cannot be ignored in any discussion of the causes of terrorism...

Moreover, in Guttman's analysis, the terrorist requires a liberal rather than a right-wing audience for success. Liberals make the terrorist respectable by accepting the ideology that the terrorist alleges informs his or her acts. The terrorist also requires liberal control of the media for the transmission of his or her ideology...

"...as you win????"

Yeah... That's the Al Davis brand of terrorism... "Just win, baby!" Unfortunately, there's some truth to that, at least temporarily... losing is an orphan, but winning has many fathers! (ancient quote)

The ELF were active in Wisonsin almost 3 years ago. This isn't just a Left Coast movement, recruits and targets are drummed up on liberal campuses across our Country. See this story:

The Mean Green

They break laws, destroy property and stir strong reactions. Are these armies of the night helping their causes or shooting themselves in the foot?

They entered the U.S. Forest Service research property outside Rhinelander during the night of July 20, 2000 and proceeded to vandalize eight vehicles, and cut down or strip the bark from nearly 500 trees. The intruders fled the scene, but left their calling card spray-painted on several vehicles: ELF.

Thanks to the Center for Consumer Freedom for pulling the plug on taxpayer funding for these "educational" speakers.

Doesn't sound like they got the plug pulled. The conference is still happening, only the public is no longer allowed to hear what goes on in there.

Now that it's ultra-private and invitation-only, they'll probably drop the pretense of it being a "dialogue between activists and academics" and call it what it really is---a back-patting, recruiting, and strategy session.

FR needs a mole in there. Transcripts would be invaluable.

And the government needs to bug the entire place.

Hostile characterization? I would say the media has been pretty fair to them considering they are terrorists.

Another update. Last night the Earth First Traveling Roadshow (their name not mine) spoke on campus. They showed about an hours worth of video about how to use lockboxes (metal shields over chains) to chain yourself to gates, desks, vehicles, etc and organizing tree sits. Then their spokesperson spoke for about an hour on how to disrupt logging and other "commercial explotations" of the environment. One of her main points was the importance of overthrowing the government and abolishing capitalism. While she didn't directly incourage people to destroy property, she did suggest that if you felt it was necessary, then it was ok.

They were sponsered by another campus group called Taking Responsibility for the Earth and Environment or TREE. In my opinion, they attempted to keep opposition away because very little advertising was done, most of it word of mouth between like minded people. Fortunately I found out because I know a member of TREE. I alerted a forestry professor, and we were able to get the word out to the forestry department, and about half the people that attended were forestry students, faculty, and professionals.

After the videos and speaker, they had a "folk singer" named David Rovics that performed songs like "Bush is a Moron".
