Please help me find a famous quote

My local radio station is taking callers about opinions on the anti-war protests tomorrow.

There is a famous quote that says something about there being some things that are worse than war and that the protesters have that right to protest only because better men than they were willing to fight and die for them.

Can anyone direct me to the exect quote?

I hope I am doing this right.

War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. I don't know that one, but I know of a gentleman soldier in New Hampshire, who said this, during the Revolutionary War:

Is this it? I have seen quotes somewhat like this, and along the lines of what you described, ascribed to George Orwell and the fictional Colonel Jessup.

Churchill, to my utter dismay, never said that. The attribution of that excellent quote to Sir Winston is, alas, an urban legend.

Nevertheless, the quote is pretty close to the mark.

Regardless of the quote- the comment is incorrect. Our right to protest is inalienable right bestowed upon all men by God. No one dies to bestow rights on others.

True, however, it is a fact that a few die so that the many may continue to exercise those rights.

I don't know how accurate this is, but these guys tried to track the quote down. Here's their results:

"If you are under thirty and are not a socialist you have no heart. If you are over thirty and still a socialist, you have no brain..."

This is an updated variation of an apparently ever-relevant opinion, first quoted by Guisot, a French monarchist statesman under Louis Philippe:

Not to be a republican at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head. -Francois Guisot (1787-1874)

which was later changed by Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929) into:

Not to be a socialist at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head.

Bestow maybe not, protect, certainly.

As a bonus exercise: Suppose the slaves in the US had sucessfully earned their freedom? Since another (Lincoln) granted their freedom, couldn't another recind it?

Has the subconcious awareness of this "unearned" freedom sapped the vigor of that particular group for the last 140 years?

Extra points awarded for comparisons to any group that paid for it's own freedom in blood...
