Please help me find a famous quote

Posted on 02/14/2003 3:38:37 PM PST by 429CJ

My local radio station is taking callers about opinions on the anti-war protests tomorrow.

There is a famous quote that says something about there being some things that are worse than war and that the protesters have that right to protest only because better men than they were willing to fight and die for them.

Can anyone direct me to the exect quote?

I hope I am doing this right.

Thanks

War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
John Stuart Mill

I don't know that one, but I know of a gentleman soldier in New Hampshire, who said this, during the Revolutionary War:

LIVE FREE OR DIE!

That description fits the French to a T.

Don't worry, you can make something up and attribute it to Mark Twain, Groucho Marx, or Shakespeare.

Is this it? I have seen quotes somewhat like this, and along the lines of what you described, ascribed to George Orwell and the fictional Colonel Jessup.

I hope I shall never see the day when the forces of right are deprived of the right of force.

We sleep soundly in our beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf.

Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees all the others. ,

If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.

Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

We cannot guarantee victory, but only deserve it.

From what I have seen of our Russian friends and Allies during the war, I am convinced that there is nothing they admire so much as strength, and there is nothing for which they have less respect than for weakness, especially military weakness.

Last time I saw it all coming and cried aloud to my own fellow-countrymen and to the world, but no one paid any attention. Up till the year 1933 or even 1935, Germany might have been saved from the awful fate which has overtaken her and we might all have been spared the miseries Hitler let loose upon mankind. There never was a war in all history easier to prevent by timely action than the one which has just desolated such great areas of the globe.

Winston Churchill(1946)

While all the expert quote people are here...

Where and when exactly, did Winston Churchill say this:

If you're in your twenties and not a liberal, you are heartless.
If you are in your forties and not a conservative, you are stupid.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,

Ummmm.
That's not quite Winston... if I remember right,

"If you are under thirty are are not a socialist you have no heart.
If you are over thirty and still a liberal, you have no brain..."

Now as to where and when will have to wait til I get to my books...

OK let's try that again...

"If you are under thirty and are not a socialist you have no heart.
If you are over thirty and still a socialist, you have no brain..."
