Just today the History Channel had a story on the draft riot of 1863 in NYC. Turned into anti black riots. Black homes were torched and 12 free blacks were lynched.
Federal troops had to restore order.

Just as insulting are those from the south who insist on calling you a Yankee, even though your north-western home state was a territory, not a state during the civil war. It is a rampant stereotype
