Peggy Noonan: The Anti-Ikes
Opinion Journal ^ | 02/24/03 | Peggy Noonan

Edited on 04/23/2004 12:05:18 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

Two ex-presidents could learn from Eisenhower and the Bay of Pigs.

Two of our former presidents, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, have been talking a lot about their views and feelings on Iraq. It would be nice if they took to speaking less and thinking more. They could start with an event in the latter years of Dwight David Eisenhower, a former president who knew how to do the job.

Clinton and Carter will both be destroyed by history. It's little satisfaction now, while we watch their petty behavior, but it's sure going to be fun to watch when the true stories start getting printed.

Liberals won't always own the media. It's slipping away from them already with lower profits and ratings. Journalism students can barely write, and the electronic media is inundated with empty headed faces that fool nobody.

Carter and Clinton have proven to the world that they are not now, nor were they ever, leaders. Their recent conduct is shameful.

And what better spokesmen to propagate the Anti-American point of view than our good friends Carter and Clinton? We've all seen how effective their own foreign policy was. Carter's handling of the Iran hostage crisis made us the laughingstock of the world for several years. Clinton presided over the dismantling of our military and intelligence services at a time when Americans were being killed in Saudi Arabia, two embassies in Africa, and aboard the U.S.S. Cole, and plans for 9/11 were years in the making. You tell 'em, guys!

In Bill's case, it will most likely be an STD.

>>>But why did Eisenhower give him such public assistance and support? And why did the others?

Because it was another era. It was pre-Vietnam. To make partisan advantage out of an American failure would classless, vulgar and most of all destructive. But it wasn't just the style of the times, it was their style. Ike and the rest showed support because they were fully mature and serious. They knew America was in trouble and they loved their country. So they put aside their own grievances and criticisms, put the country's needs ahead of their own, and showed the world unity.

>>>They were, that is, patriots.

Carter and Clinton aren't patriots. They're anti-American scumbags!

Unfortunately, The two former presidents are being admired and sought out to comment on many issues.. instead of being scrutinized and questioned about their antics and discredited for their lack of professionalism. It is a shame, but it has become a Democrat's tradmark to accept the unacceptable in the name of opposition. Expect more of it.

Kennedy said that hereafter if he got into anything like this, "it is going to be a success."

Oh yeah, Vietnam was a HUGE success! What is it about Democrats? They can't do foreign policy to save their lives?

I believe most Americans are beginning to understand just what a slime x42 really is. I hope folks continue to point out the difference in his behavior and that of Pres. George H. W. Bush. There have been so many times you could tell Poppy wanted to just come out and smack x42 down, but he knew that is what former Presidents are NOT supposed to do! Now that x42 is out of office and he and the Georgia peanut farmer are mouthing off all over the world, Poppy may make an exception, and I hope he does!

Clinton and Carter are both aware of the detrimental effects of the criticism of the Bush foreign policy. Neither one of them sees the US as anything special. They both see the world as a flat playing field, to attribute special characteristics to the US would assume that the US is better than other countries, and give it more power. That would not fit into their New World Order scheme of things. Carter very much wants be considered a player in the New World Order and Clinton thinks that he defines the New World Order. The truth is that if Bush is successful in deposing Saddam Hussein and establishing some kind of democracy in the region, the New World Order may never come to fruition and that is what the opposition to the war in Iraq is all about.

It was Kennedy who, only weeks after his November election, told CIA director Allen Dulles that he wanted the agency to move forward on Cuban invasion plans. After he was in the White House he consented to and encouraged the plans, and personally tinkered with them, to their detriment.

JFK owed it to the Mafia to get Cuba back in return for getting him elected.

OF course the Mafia recognized when they were shorted with a half-fast show and didn't forget about it.

Mr. Carter is a very nice, confused man of considerable vanity.

A serious misunderstanding of Jimmuh. The Peanut Farmer is in fact a deeply resentful hardened ideologue, farther to the left than anyone else ever elected President. His trashing of George W. Bush is motivated by a searing hatred of conservative Republicans.

Some essential reading on Billy's brother:

The hopelessness of Jimmy Carter

I used to think what Pokey posted about Carter, but I have come over to TheMole's side on this. I'm beginning to think Carter was a worse President than X41. Selling Iran down the river leading to the Iran hostage crisis, payoffs from radical Arabs, the Panama Canal, appeasement of North Korea, it just goes on and on.

This was an excellent article and brought up a lot of points I'd never considered before. And your observation is correct, also:

Neither one of them [Carter, Clinton] sees the US as anything special.

Disgusting and sad, but true.

Carter and Clinton never seem to learn from history...and are not satisfied that their policies have been dismal failures, but seem determined to disgrace themselves more.

Their contempt for Bush and attempts to undermine him are way too obvious. I pray their efforts backfire.

IMO, the key phrase is But the most important backing Kennedy needed was that of his immediate predecessor,....

Bush could pander to the Carter-Clinton crowd, or should I say try to pander. It just is not worth it:

Carter turned out to be even a worse politician out of office than when he was in. The only way he can get noticed
and receive more than basic human respect is to be anti-American, especially when it's in the best interests
of the country and its citizens. If he is really a peace at any price-nik, he would have declined the naming of an
attack submarine after him.

Clinton is such a scatological combination of greed, envy, and lust, that he can't wait to mess up Bush
just because he can, regardless of the his "convictions", or the needs of the country.

My point being that neither Carter/Clinton have the best interests of the country at heart, so consulting them will
only empower them to give "Useful Idiot" style aid and comfort to the enemy.

Our President, George Bush, has shown more integrity and class than the boorish Bill Clinton and the air headedness of Jimmy Carter. They both shame their country, with Clinton I can understand that as he has never put America first, but for Carter well, you have to wonder about the little man – intelligence is not his strong suit.

E-mail the White House today and let our President know you stand with him. Then write or call the Clintons and tell them how shabbily they treat America and Americans. Let Carter know he has crossed the line for ex-presidents also. Jimmy Carter championing human rights throughout the world should remember his country; Mother Teresa he’s not! Party before Principal cheap shots from these two and Mrs. Clinton are hurting the nation, no doubt about it.

From Eisenhower a verbal smack. "That is exactly the opposite of what would really happen. The Soviets follow their own plans, when they see any sign of weakness they show their strength." JFK said he'd been advised not to show America's hand. Eisenhower hit back: American support, training, materiel and leadership would immediately be obvious to everyone. "How could you expect the world to believe that we had nothing to do with it?" He told Kennedy when America resorts to arms, "it must be a success."

Ike's advice to the prima donna Kennedy may have actually saved us from a nuclear fait accompli or worse in Cuba in '62.

I still like Ike, possibly the greatest president of his century.
