A New Move on Estrada ('Tain't over yet!)

In perhaps its most forceful effort yet to break the stalemate over the appeals-court nomination of Miguel Estrada, the White House has now invited every member of the Senate who has doubts about Estrada's legal views to submit written questions to Estrada by the close of business Friday. In a letter delivered Thursday to all 100 senators, White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales said Estrada will respond by next Tuesday.

I don't have faith, just respect for his analysis and inside connections. For the record, he did not say that the filibuster would work. He said it MIGHT work and that was a significant change from what his republican sources were telling him before.

For the life of me, I don't understand what makes you people so overconfident and so unwilling to consider the possibility that you could be mislead by mere words spoken on the senate floor by politicians.

It is probably too late now to force the Democrats' hand. Republicans moreover may believe that if Democrats succeed in blocking Estrada's confirmation, Hispanic voters will punish Democrats at the polls. Don't bet on it. More likely, Hispanics will see that for all their good intentions, Republicans can't deliver when it counts.

And that makes the Republicans seem in touch with who in a country that lists Iraq, terrorism and the economy as their top three concerns? I believe a filibuster is a win-win situation for the American people. The public will get a view of the Dems obstructionism, plus the senate will not be able to do any damage to our pocketbooks or freedoms if the Democrats are talking non-stop to block the vote on the judge.
