"Well for one thing, if he's walking down the hall of the White House to worship..."

What on earth are you talking about? Is the WH a church? Its the house of the people of all beliefs...

Newsweak presumably intended this article to damage Bush. What they don't seem to understand is that most of the country doesn't think the same way they do.

I'm a little surprised at Martin E. Marty letting himself be used in this way. He is basically a mainstream liberal, but he's also usually a little more tactful than this. I met him once, and he's absolutely charming, although unfortunately his theological views are destructive.

"Secondly and more important, it might do Mr. Bush some good to get out to a real church and worship with his real constituents. IMHO."

How do you know he isn't? and secondly, what does one worshipping in a church have to do with real constituents?

The atmosphere inside the White House, insiders say, is suffused with an aura of prayerfulness. There have always been Bible-study groups there; even Clintonites had one. But the groups are everywhere now, Fineman reports.

Would someone please show us the guidelines of how many White House Bible study groups are acceptable and what number are considered 'zealous.' Maybe we could establish a quota system so we know for sure. Sheesh. [What next, "Many presidents pray, but Bush actually believes he is talking to a higher power."]

Also, does Fineman acutally long for the days of lesbian sex in the White House showers, dildos on the White House Christmas trees and urine stains on the walls?

President Bush attends various denominations, including St. John's Episcopal which is right across from the WH and a number of different Methodist churches in DC (not Foundry though - nest of liberals).

He doesn't make a big deal out of it, and he never discloses where he is attending until afterwards.

He goes to worship, not to make a big "photo op" with a Bible the size of a Yugo under his arm.

Most weekends he is at Camp David, where they attend the services at the small chapel there. Camp David's chapel has a small congregation made up of military and civilian employees of the presidential retreat, and is served by a military chaplain.

When staying at the White House over the weekend, he usually attends church at the Episopalian church across the street from the White House (I forget the name). Occasionally he visits other churches in the DC area. As far as I know, he attends a service every Sunday, unless travelling overseas.

Can we back up? I asked whether or not Bush usually worships at a White House chapel (which I'm sure exists) when he's in Washington on Sunday or whether he goes out to church. I'm not sure of the answer, but someone used the word "chapel." OF COURSE the White House belongs to everybody of of all religions. I'm not making any point other than what I think I made.

"The problem isn't with Bush's sincerity, but with his evident conviction that he's doing God's will."

Well, let's look at the facts.

1. Saddam has murdered over a million people
2. Saddam tortures people
3. Saddam has men's wives raped in front of them to punish them.
4. Saddam has squandered the treasure of his people to develope WMD (who's only use is to kill people)

Gee, I wonder what gives our president the idea that God would be on the side of those wanting to stop Saddam?

Bill Clinton went to church because the cameras were there not the other way around.

I question everything Clinton's did, do and will do.

Real church, I don't need President Bush showing and telling where he goes to church to test his fruit.

The Clinton's were a mockery to the Written Word and their actions speak to their motivations nothing more than "wolves in sheep clothing". Pure EVIL.

. . . forgot to include the article, which you may find informative:

Washington Times: President's Faith Runs Deep

It runs silent, too. As it should. I'm sick of watching the former president prance out of Foundry with his Bible . . . on his way to an illicit tryst. "Whited Sepulchre Alert!" Yeccch!

There is a small chapel at Camp David. There is NO chapel in the White House.

Thank you again. I'm somewhat surprised to learn there isn't a chapel in the White House, but I appreciate your patience in answering the question.

What I have noticed is that Jews (liberal Jews, anyway) are on the same page as atheists when it comes to opposing Christianity and the influence Christianity has on American society and politics. Right along with the atheists and the separation of church and state crowd are liberal rabbis and Jews, shoulder to shoulder, fearful of Christian anything. I think this is very unfortunate in light of the fact that Christians are very supportive of Jews and their religious freedom. And then look at Israel and you find that Chrsitians and their holy sites are of little importance to the Jews and that Muslims actually get more in the way of respect and consessions. I honestly believe many liberal Jews have a strong dislike of Christianity and worry that many of their own are leaving Judaism for it.

Thanks for posting that article. It was informative and one of the people quoted made the point better than I that "Christianity is a communitarian religion."

Secondly and more important, it might do Mr. Bush some good to get out to a real church and worship with his real constituents. IMHO.

Around here the title we prefer for Bush is president.
