Those are still useful social skills in adult life as possibly the most important thing to know is to be able to read your co workers and know what type of a person he/she is. Yes but those things can be learned at a less tender age and in a much more controlled setting. We have a few really ill behaved kids at church for my kids to learn those tough rules on, for example. How did Jesus or John the baptist learn those lessons?

The same social structures exist in real adult life with office politics, especially in the federal govt. Your kids should at least get a small taste of it and learn to work around all the bs that goes on as it continues in most work places. Right. We are praying that they will have the option to work in an environment dominated by "intolerant", "hateful" Christians with their biblical foundation for dealing with other people (love, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, self-control, selflessness). But we are definitely describing to them the social/political motivations and methods of all kinds of people whom they may encounter, that they may recognize it but not feel sucked into it.
The experiences I had in junior high would've been infinitely more tolerable if I had had a clue. As it was, I was blind, and dumb. I didn't know that I didn't know.

I'm starting to seriously consider homeschooling for my son next year. He's spending way too much time with homework. I actually don't mind school, but I don't want him to spend much time with homework. He's only 8, and he needs play time. He spends hours on homework, mainly because he's just sick and tired of doing the work.

That's what is happening to my son. He's missing recess, and he's spending hours on homework. He's only 8, and he is supposed to have fun.

My 16 year old goes to public school. He attends his local high school for 1/2 day then goes downtown to the technical school for his computer classes. The tech school is state of the art, comparable to many college level computer curriculum.
He is running into all kinds of beauracratic garbage as he tries to take advantage of the opportunites offered:
Teachers refusing to stay past 4:00 pm to allow him to take a make-up exam. (legit abscence)
Making the kids have a Novell 5 certification before allowing them to enroll in the Linux class (Novell 6 is the current issue, besides who uses Novell anymore anyway?)
There is a middle college available but you cannot take classes there and the Tech school at the same time. (School superintendents' policy)
My son told me yesterday, "They (school admins) make it difficult for someone who wants to excell on their own".
I wish I could have homeschooled.

If you don't teach your kids the facts of life about how a large number of people manipulate, cheat, steal, and compromise their values to further their own position, then you are doing a disservice to your kids.
School doesn't teach that. Hard knocks or wise parents do.

He's only 8, and he needs play time. He spends hours on homework, mainly because he's just sick and tired of doing the work. I strongly urge you to "go for it." A standard six-hour day's worth of "education" at school can easily be matched with 1.5 hours' worth of learning at home. The other 4.5 hours are the real curriculum, the one designed to transform little human beings, creative and joyous, into docile factory hands and cannon fodder for an industrial militarized state. Our two oldest kids spent about that much per day, plus being read to for an hour a night. We finally put Greg in a public school, North Carolina State University, where he's been a Dean's List student ever since. His edge? Having learned how to take responsibility for his own education. For me, this is only one of many payoffs. Greg is finding his own ways to apply the faith we raised him in. And, we've had the pleasure of his company for 20 years. Not just a few scraps of time at the end of stress-filled days spent off site, but the natural, pleasurable give-and-take of daily family living. The time you are given to enjoy your son is precious. Take it back, and you will never regret it.

This social skills argument is a crockEvery time someone asks 'What about socialization?' I reply that I'm not raising a socialist.
To: Chemist_Geek
I agree with you, but, then again, I'm only raising 3 children.

Talk to homeschool mama. She's been my greatest encourager regarding homeschooling. She "talked" me into it. LOL You know, homework was probably one of the biggest reasons why I decided to pull the kids out of school. My daughter was headed for junior high. I knew the kids were getting 3+ hours of homework a night and I just wasn't going to have it. She's MY daughter, not the schools. She needs her family and friends. She needed a life. She was in school from 7:30 to 4:00 then came home to several more hours of work.
There are some wonderful people here who would be happy to talk with you about it. If you have any questions, just ask away. I was sort of dreading homeschooling, but made up my mind I was going to make it work. All that worry was for nothing. We are having a wonderful time. It was the best thing we ever did for our family.
Sorry for any typo's. I'm running out the door. Talk to you soon.

Let's hear from a guy who's been through the experience: I was homeschooled for 19 years. And ya know what? My only passion is for my Catholic faith and the Mission Christ gave to His followers. I suck in math, but I know God doesn't want me to be an engineer. I have been called to serve. I enter the seminary in August. Everyone say a prayer for me, ok? Thanks!

As someone who sees the public (government) schools daily, I'd say get your children out before middle shcool, if not sooner. Or into private schools.
To: luckystarmom

Welcome Joseph! I'm sure your parents are proud of you. I'm glad you're here. Don't worry about posting mess ups. We've all been here awhile and still make them. God bless you.

So now, at least once a week, I swear at him, show him dirty pictures, offer him drugs, beat him up and steal his lunch money just so he doesn't miss out. (That last one was from a FReeper, I have a guess but forget who.) Actually, that one's been around forever (I think I heard it about ten years ago), but it's my favorite retort for the socialization issue. If only I could remember it....
