Seattle Radio Station causes high school to immediately remove offensive pictures from website
3-05-03 | bellevuesbest

Posted on 03/05/2003 3:51:55 PM PST by bellevuesbest

KVI 570 talk show host John Carlson led his 3:00 program today with a topic he researched today. There's a social studies teacher at Issaquah High School who posted offensive propaganda images of the Bush Administration and corporate America.

Turns out the website is integral to this teachers course and required reading for classroom assignments and quizs. The website is also the responsibility of the school district and taxpayer funded.

Carlson's exposure has resulted in the website being cleaned up. All the offensive images are now gone!

Way to go Carlson and KVI 570!

Material from a required-reading website is not viewed as opinion from school students. This is similar to being in a textbook it seems to me.

I don't like censorship in any form. I trust Americans to make-up their own minds. If these anti-American idiots want to spew one-sided propaganda on their website, fine. Let them be seen as the reactionary idiots that they are.

What do you mean censorship?

The school was perfectly free to keep putting up an anti-American website. No one's rights were abused here. The school administrators pulled it or the teacher pulled it out of fear of the opinion of the fellow-citizens.

Beyond that, there are still remnants of teachers' conduct codes. They are not allowed to be anti-American and they're not supposed to bring their private politics into the classroom.

In addition, tolerating this might lead to such a teacher discriminating against a student who is pro-military.

Click on European History and start surfing. It appears the everything that was offensive is gone.

They just said on the radio that the teacher himself, removed the images. I'm not sure he really needed to necessarily take the ones down that were in the Propaganda link as they were representative of the subject.

I'm looking for the teacher's name. I'll post it later, if I find it. I'm also looking for the teacher's phone number and email address. BTW, the web site is now shut down -- you can't see the contents if you wanted to.

The problem, though, is that his website is paid for by public money, and is required as part of his high school course.

He has a right to his opinions, and the expression thereof, but NOT when we are paying for it.

CPB is bad enough.

So this needs to be ended.

The problem is that this is a school teacher that is a government employee. He is not acting as a private citizen.

Also, it may be fine for him to post this crap but it is also fine for the parents of the children being taught to bitch about it if they dont approve.

Would you want your children to be forced to look at only the radical left-wings viewpoints and not even see the other side?

What if the NEA decided to put out right-wing propoganda at all times? I would be against this as well, but it would make me laugh. In all honesty, it is what they deserve, but I hope you see my point.

It was required reading for the teacher's course. Taxpayers are paying for it. Let the teacher do it on his/her own website, not an official teacher website.

Apparently the teacher is a firm believer in censorship -- self-censorship that is.

Especially when it might prevent his getting run out of town on a rail.

I trust ADULT Americans to make up their own minds, because they have the option to turn the channel, block the web page from ever showing up on their computer again, etc. This, on the other hand, is a case where kids, who are required by law to be in those schools, were having Bush-hate propaganda forced down their throats against their will. The school and teacher have absolutely ZERO right to do that to other peoples' children.

I am a Feeeper teacher. I strongly believe that my job, any teacher's job, is to teach, not to indoctrinate. My views are mine I do not impose them on my students. (I do answer their questions about my opinion if they ask about that specifically).

The biggest compliment that I get is "You're not like the other teachers".

Fine, so let this teacher set up his/her OWN web site to spew anti-American propaganda. In my book, this teacher does not have the right to use taxpayer-funded school resources for this purpose. Besides, if I want to listen to or view some taxpayer funded I-hate-America rant, I'll turn on PBS or NPR.

Someone needs to sit down every one of these teachers and tell them that school does not exist to give them a platform to express their personal opinions. The first amendment does not extend to the work place where statements have consequences especially for government employees. They are free to spew their hatred for America and the President in they're off duty time. Looks like the lack of discipline in schools starts with the teachers.

In a way, I kind of agree with you.....because it's better to KNOW what these teachers are promoting, than to have it "hidden" in the classroom only. BUT, on the other hand, he STILL has FREE SPEECH....no one MADE him take it down, he (or the school district) decided it was not appropriate for the school to have such a one-sided picture...and they can make that decision, also.....but there has been NO ruling that it HAD to be REMOVED.....

I was educated in a commie, liberal high school. One of my history teachers gave us Howard Zinn's "People's History of the United States" as a supplemental textbook.

But you have to recognize that there is an enormous distinction between a teacher placing a leftist propaganda piece on a reading list, and this same teacher using the school district's computers to set up a leftist web site.

Besides the use of taxpayer funds to support this site, there's also the question of the teacher's use of his employer's resources. Obviously the school felt that he was using their computers in an inappropriate manner, since the site was dismantled.

Wait, I have an even better idea, and it's a really novel one too.

How about the teachers just stick to imparting hard knowledge to the kids INSTEAD OF cramming leftist propaganda, collectivist values, and feelgood psychobabble down their throats? It's what we are PAYING them to do, after all...
