RAFSANJANI SAYS MUSLIMS SHOULD USE NUCLEAR WEAPON AGAINST ISRAEL

TEHRAN 14 Dec. (IPS) One of Iran’s most influential ruling cleric called Friday on the Muslim states to use nuclear weapon against Israel, assuring them that while such an attack would annihilate Israel, it would cost them "damages only".

"If a day comes when the world of Islam is duly equipped with the arms Israel has in possession, the strategy of colonialism would face a stalemate because application of an atomic bomb would not leave any thing in Israel but the same thing would just produce damages in the Muslim world", Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani told the crowd at the traditional Friday prayers in Tehran.

Analysts said not only Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani’s speech was the strongest against Israel, but also this is the first time that a prominent leader of the Islamic Republic openly suggests the use of nuclear weapon against the Jewish State.

"It seems that Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani is forgetting that due to the present intertwinement of Israel and Palestine, the destruction of the Jewish State would also means the mass killing of Palestinian population as well", observed one Iranian commentator.

While Israel is believed to possess between 100 to 200 nuclear war heads, the Islamic Republic and Iraq are known to be working hard to produce their own atomic weapons with help from Russia and North Korea, Pakistan, also a Muslim state, has already a certain number of nuclear bomb.

In a lengthy speech to mark the so-called "International Qods (Jerusalem) Day" celebrated in Iran only, Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani, who, as the Chairman of the Assembly to Discern the Interests of the State, is the Islamic Republic’s number two man after Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’i, said since Israel was an emanation of Western colonialism therefore "in future it will be the interests of colonialism that will determine existence or non-existence of Israel".

Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani made the unprecedented threat as, following new suicide operations inside Israel and against Israeli settlements by Palestinian extremists in PA-controlled zones, responded by Israel’s heaviest bombarding of Palestinian cities, police, communication and radio-television installations, killing and wounding more than 200 people on both sides, resulted in the halting of all contacts between Israel and the PA of Mr. Yaser Arafat.

He said since Israel is the product of Western colonialism, "the continued existence of Israel depends on interests of arrogance and colonialism and as long as the base is helpful for colonialism, it is going to keep it.

Hashemi-Rafsanjani advised Western states not to pin their hopes on Israel's violence because it will be "very dangerous".

"We are not willing to see security in the world is harmed", he said, warning against the "eruption of the Third World War.

"War of the pious and martyrdom seeking forces against peaks of colonialism will be highly dangerous and might fan flames of the World War III", the former Iranian president said, backing firmly suicide operations against Israel.

Quoted by the official news agency IRNA, Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani said weakening of Palestinian Jihad is "unlikely", as the Palestinians have come to the conclusion that talks would be effective only "in light of struggle and self-sacrifice- the two key elements that gave way to beginning of the second Intifada".
Iranian analysts and commentators outside Iran immediately reacted to Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani’s statement, expressing fear that it might trigger an international backlash against Iran itself, giving Israel, the United States and other Western and even Arab nations to further isolate Iran as a source of threat to regional security.
"Jews shall expect to be once again scattered and wandering around the globe the day when this appendix is extracted from the region and the Muslim world", Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani warned, blaming on the United States and Britain the "creation of the fabricated entity" in the heart of Arab and Muslim world.

"The man who considers himself as the most able politician in the Islamic Republic utters such nonsense and empty threats at a very time that the hard line and extremist government of Israel under Mr. Ariel Sharon is looking for justification of its repressive policy against Palestinians", said Mr. Ahmad Salamatian, a veteran political analyst based in Paris.

"At a time that the right wing Israeli government is claiming that the very existence of Israel and the Jews are threatened and uses this pretext as an instrument to advance its policy of repression in Palestine, such statements and ushering such dangerous menaces by one of Iran’s top officials is nothing but bringing water to Israel’s propaganda mill, providing it with more justifications explaining its present maximalist policy", he told the Persian service of Radio France Internationale.

Though Mr. Salamatian is of the opinion that Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani’s words are part of both his own show and the ongoing internal tensions between conservatives and reformers, however, he also agrees with other Iranian analysts that his "untimely" menace could backfire, becoming a justification for threats against Iran, at a time that the United States and its allies are determined to continue the fight against international terrorism.

"One of Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani’s main characteristics in Iranian politics during the past twenty years is that in order to preserve his own position, he is ready to set fire to all the Caesareas for one handkerchief, including, in the present case, providing Israel with enough pretext to attack Iran", he noted, adding: "for the time being and what is important for Mr. Sharon is that this kind of statements are open invitation for more violence, an encouragement to extremists on either side of the Israel-Palestine conflict".

Observing that despite the fact that Israel is believed to have more than one hundred atomic warheads and the necessary technology to transport them to the very heart of Iran and elsewhere, but no Israeli official nor any newspaper have ever raised the slightest possibility of an atomic threat, "even in defence of their very existence", Mr. Salamatian wondered the reasons behind Mr. Hashemi-Rafsanjani’s declaration, which he said should be taken seriously "considering the rank of the man who pronounced it". After this speech from a person with a high degree of political authority in Iran, any attack by Israel against an Iranian nuclear facility has to be categorized as defensive rather than pre-emptive. AJP Taylor pointed out quite some time ago that Hitler from 1933 on clearly told other governments that he was going to engage in aggressive miliary actions, and they wilfully stuck their heads in the sand.

Israel, fortunately, has been far more careful in taking its enemies at their word. Thank heavens someone learns from history.

It would appear that the Iranians - and, let's face it, a lot of other Moslem/Arabic countries - are in such a blind fury of the Jewish State that they are willing to turn their entire country into a suicide bomber.

Israel has been very coy about its possession of nuclear weapons - not to mention the size of its arsenal - unlike the Arabs who are actively threatening a nuclear attack even when they don't yet have the weapons. This Moslem sabre-rattling was the principal reason that the Israelis bombed Saddam's nuclear bomb factory in (I think) 1981. After all, if they're explicitly telling everyone they're going to use the bombs on you, that's about all the evidence you need to go in for a disabling strike.

Israel would undoubtedly not take a nuclear (or other) attack sitting on its hands. Even if a sneak attack destroyed all but one of its jets or all but one of its submarines, it would launch a retaliatory strike. My own suggestion is nuke the Arab oil fields first. A nuclear bomb on a major oilfield would cause a flare that could be seen by astronauts on the moon ... and would instantly reduce that Arab country's credit rating to zero. If a second wave is possible, go for the tourist attractions, such as Damascus or the pyramids and, yes, Mecca.

Iran, Russia issue joint statement

Tehran, March 12, IRNA -- Foreign ministers of Iran and Russia here Wednesday issued a joint statement showing the sides interest in promoting the bilateral cooperation on the regional and international major issues.

After key talks on the latest developments in the region and in the world, Igor Ivanov of Russia and Kamal Kharrazi of Iran vowed to try to boost strategic ties and adopt similar attitudes as for a wide spectrum of issues including the Iraq crisis.

On Iraq, the two ministers called for the crisis to be settled through peaceful means and diplomatic channels due to the fact that the works of the international atomic energy agency have shown progress.

The two ministers pledged their countries would follow attempts to find a peaceful solution to the Iraq crisis with respect to the 1441 resolution and based on the United Nations charter. They said the parliaments of Iran and Russia are also cooperating to contribute to efforts to peacefully solve the Iraq crisis.

The completion of the Gas Prom works which is operating in Iran within the framework of a consortium, the development of the phases 2 and 3 of the South Pars field of Iran and the completion of the nuclear power plants of Bushehr within the already set time as well as the carrying out of the North-South were also among the major issues mentioned by the ministers.

The sides said they would try to boost the bilateral cooperation n such areas as the exploitation of the energy resources, the aircraft building, transportation, aerospace technology, banking system and insurance.

The sides stressed the prime importance of the fourth meeting of the joint economic session staled to be held within a few days in Tehran. They stressed the need to strengthen ties in the cultural ties while underlining their will to sign shortly a cultural agreement. The two sides reaffirmed their strong will to continue their nuclear energy cooperation in the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

They dismissed US allegations that the Islamic Republic sought to acquire weapons of mass destruction and stressed Iran's commitment to UN resolutions on the peaceful use of the atomic energy.

Yea right! The ruling Iranian clerics seem to have taken a page out of the DPRK playbook. They believe the only way to deter President Bush's bold preemptive policy and assure that they stay in power is to possess nuclear capability. Putin, by backing the Tehran mullahs nuke grab while supposedly supporting the war on terror is talking out both sides of his mouth.

They reiterated that Iran's activities in the nuclear energy sector is under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and this agency's experts will soon settle in Iran permanently.

Nuclear cooperation between Tehran and Moscow has sparked fears in Washington which claims the Islamic Republic could use the plant for producing nuclear weapons.

Iran has strongly dismissed these allegations, stressing that work on the plant is totally transparent. The country has also opened the building site to regular inspections of the UN nuclear experts who have confirmed the civilian intentions of the facilities.

Iran wants to generate 6,000 megawatts of power from the plants in the next 20 years to cope with the rising demand for energy in the country while its hydrocarbon reserves become overstretched, President Mohammad Khatami has stressed.

He makes a very legimate point, e.g., that any small area's population can be wiped out, while a larger geographically spread out population has a higher probability of survival. However, this fool makes the point the by stating, "if and when we acquire Nukes we will use them" and herein lies the issue of why President Bush labeled Iran among those in the Axis of Evil - all three nations have no scruples in holding back. Iran has since the inception of the current regime, flaunted her embassies as dens of corruption and illegial enities (In the mid-80's the Iranian Embassy in Buriut was surround 24-hours a day due to America hostiages being held in the basement - and a certain US Ambassador took family members there on X-mas to visit); Iran understood that she was caught and if exposed she would be literally expelled from the international community - a very stubble use of American Diplomatic Power to achieve longer term goals....). Iraq has used these weapons and advocates their use as doctine, much in keeping from the training recieved from his major supplier and political since the '70's Mother Russia herself; as for North Korea, she has violated South Korean waters and infiltrated commandos on a continuous basis - I've seen the boats, equipment, bodies and such at the UNC Operations prior to it's return under the guise of peace talks, attended by Communist nations and the Red Cross.... Each of these three countries will use these weapons, they have no reason to use them. All three nations will be disarmed within 10-years.
