Can somebody reconcile the Dennis Miller that whipped Dan Quayle 3 times a weak on SNL with this new one who's become the darling of FR? I liked him best when he had his own talk show (sorry it tanked. I'm sure folks were upset that he just didn't rip his guests a new one each week) and I think he is funny and sharp generally, but he can drift back into the libby camp just as easily one of these days.

Eh. Bear in mind his job title was "Commedian," not RNC Flack. The funny comes first.

A comic's job is to entertain a broad cross-section of the public. Leno and Letterman and Johnny Carson don't appeal to just the right wing or left wing.

And Miller WAS more liberal then-- a lot more liberal. But I have to remind you again that he never supported Clinton, and endorsed Perot in 1992. So he's never been super-liberal.

Finally, look, who are we kidding? Dan Quayle had his virtues, and what Hollywood and the press did to him was never fair, but I'm betting a lot of people here told Dan Quayle jokes at one time or another. A lot of people considered Quayle glaringly underqualified and an enormous albatross around the neck of the Bush administration.

Sure, Dennis is a comic. I mean, somebody has to do 10-10-321 commercials, right? But he kept flogging Dan's horse long after it was dead. There were weeks when Dan wasn't even in the news or the gaff so slight that only a frothing liberal would seize on it to tell a joke-- and still he was pummeled. Then it wasn't even funny. Just sad and embarrassing to both Dan and Dennis.
