US embassies and diplomatic offices in some Gulf countries remained closed Saturday to review security as angry crowds kept up protests against the US-led invasion of Iraq.
"There is a great deal of anti-American sentiment prevailing in the region following the war in Iraq," a US official in Saudi Arabia said in explaining the decision to keep the embassy in Riyadh and consulates in Jiddah and Dhahran, as well as the American school, closed for another day.
In Bahrain, home to the US Navy's 5th Fleet, services at the US Embassy and classes at the American school, which is run by the US Department of Defense, were suspended for one day Saturday.
Chants of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" were heard again outside the embassy compound in Bahrain, where about 200 high-school students threw stones at police, who responded with tear gas. At least two students were arrested. Protesters were demanding that the embassy be permanently closed down and US forces expelled from Bahrain.
The precautionary measures came after violent anti-American protests around the Mideast on Friday. The most violent was in Yemen, where two protesters and a policeman were killed in clashes as demonstrators tried to storm the US Embassy in San`a.
Protests continued Saturday outside the Gulf region as well.
About 5,000 students gathered at Al-Azhar University, a venerable Islamic institution in Cairo, Egypt, under a high-profile security presence to prevent any potential riots.
"Oh Arab army! Where are you?" they chanted, calling on Arab nations to send troops to support Iraq in the ongoing battles with coalition forces.
Similar demonstrations were held at other universities across Egypt.
US offices in Egypt were closed as usual Saturday but expected to reopen Sunday except for the visa section and library center. The US Embassy in Jordan suspended services indefinitely on Thursday and urged Americans to "maintain a low profile."

I followed that flag halfway around the world. He's really lucky that he did not do that in front of me.
If so, then we need to clean them out as well.

If they support the terrorists they should be taken down.
U.S. must hunt down and destroy Hamas wherever they are just as we are other terrorists who want us destroyed.
