Me, I plan to move into a neighbor's big beautiful old southern plantation house. It's the only way I could ever have something that nice. LOL

The Paris Peace Conference infecting world leaders should be noted in light of SARS and the UN.

WHO team of experts in China

A WHO international team of experts in epidemiology, microbiology,
virology, and respiratory diseases arrived in Beijing, China on Sunday 23
Mar 2003. The multinational team was assembled in response to a request
from the Chinese Ministry of Health to investigate possible links between
the current SARS outbreak, which began in Asia in mid-February 2003, and an
outbreak of atypical pneumonia which began in Guangdong Province in China
in mid-November 2002.

The WHO team, which includes experts from 5 countries, will review
available epidemiological and laboratory data on cases in the southern
China outbreak. It will also propose what additional investigations should
be carried out, and which additional reagents, antibodies, tests, equipment
and expertise might be required to continue the laboratory and virological
work. This additional expertise and equipment is expected to bolster
efforts to trace the source of atypical pneumonia in Guangdong Province.

>In ten days if it was as wildly virulent and some people think, I'd expect to be EVERYWHERE. Every person infecting everyone else... there'd be no end of cases.

I hope you are right.
But I'm afraid you are wrong.
I've done some (groundless!)

extrapolations
based on the rough, incomplete
numbers that are out.

My very rough runs
show a million US hits
within just six months.

Self-replicating
systems are slow and steady
and they win the race...

Can't your friend refuse to take sick kids? Seems like that should be a stipulation of whatever contract the parents and the facility sign. If your kids are sick, stay home and take care of 'em.

Am I the only one who's reminded of the "superflu" posited by Stephen King in The Stand?

Yes, far as I know the policy is you cannot bring your child in if the child is running a temperature. She says many times the parents drop the child off (unknowingly or knowingly, I have no way of knowing) and they have to call the workplace of the parent soon after to come get the child. But, ofcourse, by that time a sick child has exposed many other healthy children. A scary scenario in a case like this, IMO.

She tells me many angering stories, but that's another thread-another day.

FWIW, there is a higher percentage of Christians in communist China than there are in Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Just a bit of additional data... the two SARS cases in Michigan are in the Grand Rapids area. I'm not sure if Grand Rapids has an international airport.

What's both disturbing and comforting is... this is the same area where some mysterious flu-like illness killed around ten kids earlier this year. That might have been SARS. If it is-- and since the outbreak began in China LAST year-- then the bug is probably already out and about, and isn't quite as virulent as previously supposed. Keeping a very close eye on this.

I know I had the flu for the first time since I was a kid, this year.
