Did they go underground to the labs there?

That's the question no one is asking. The Washington Post did a story on this find yesterday, suggesting that the Iraqis had tampered with the IAEA seals and released radiation on the site purposely before they deserted it, to harm U.S. troops. The story referred to material the IAEA had tagged in "bunkers" but it's unclear whether "bunkers" refers to the vast underground facilities found by the Marines.

The other thing is the final testing on this stuff is assuredly not going to be done by the Marines.

I don't mean to insult the Marines or anything, but they're a "lean and mean" fighting force with a lot fewer of the specialist troops even the Army has. I'm sure they have people that can test for nuclear materials but I really seriously doubt they have a vastly-experienced highly-educated nuclear exploitation team.

If this was Prine talking to people from NEST or the Department of Energy or the NRC that had been brought in, I'd be a lot more confident.

The problem is people from NEST or DoE or the NRC would almost certainly not talk to embedded reporters wandering around in the middle of their testing.

" Is he now a war criminal being complicit in the coverup?"

Time to check his bank accounts and his stock portfolios...and Blix's as well.

I suspect the UN was being complicit but it would be nice to see these two considered suspect in the public eyes.

The other night, I saw her eyeball an image of an aircraft on an aircraft carrier (videophone) and described it as an "EA-6B Prowler" without balking. I was thinking A6 Intruder and she had me beat without even taking a breath. Beauty and brains without-a-doubt.

Wouldn't it have been a hoot if she'd called it by the Navy nickname?

Mercury is more of a heavy-metal toxin than plutonium, and yet I'm still here after rolling little balls of mercury around on my palm when I was a kid.

Just so you know; inhalation of mercury vapor is what does the most damage, followed by ingestion of methyl mercury.

http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/healthguidelines/mercuryvapor/recognition.html

2. Effects on Humans: Mercury vapor can cause effects in the central and peripheral nervous systems, lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes in humans. It is also mutagenic and affects the immune system [Hathaway et al. 1991; Clayton and Clayton 1981; Rom 1992]. Acute exposure to high concentrations of mercury vapor causes severe respiratory damage, while chronic exposure to lower levels is primarily associated with central nervous system damage [Hathaway et al. 1991]. Chronic exposure to mercury is also associated with behavioral changes and alterations in peripheral nervous system [ACGIH 1991]. Pulmonary effects of mercury vapor inhalation include diffuse interstitial pneumonitis with profuse fibrinous exudation [Gosselin 1984]. Glomerular dysfunction and proteinuria have been observed mercury exposed workers [ACGIH 1991]. Chronic mercury exposure can cause discoloration of the cornea and lens, eyelid tremor and, rarely, disturbances of vision and extraocular muscles [Grant 1986]. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions have been reported in individuals exposed to mercury vapor [Clayton and Clayton 1981]. Mercury vapor is reported to be mutagenic in humans, causing aneuploidy in lymphocytes of exposed workers [Hathaway et al. 1991].

2. Chronic exposure: Chronic exposure to mercury may result in weakness, fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, and disturbance of gastrointestinal function. A tremor may develop beginning with the fingers, eyelids, and lips which may progress to generalized trembling of the entire body and violent chronic spasms of the extremities. Parallel with development of the tremors, behavioral and personality changes may develop including increased excitability, memory loss, insomnia, and depression. The skin may exhibit abnormal blushing, dermographia, excessive sweating and irregular macular rashes. Severe salivation and gingivitis is also characteristic of chronic toxicity [Hathaway et al. 1991; Gosselin 1984]. Another manifestation of chronic mercury exposure is characterized by apathy, anorexia, flush, fever, a nephrotic syndrome with albuminuria and generalized edema, diaphoresis, photophobia, insomnia and a pruritic and sometimes painful scaling or peeling of the skin of the hands and feet with bullous lesions [Gosselin 1984].

The "Mad Hatter" in Alice In Wonderland was inspired by hatters/furriers from that era who used mercury to preserve furs and who suffered from chronic mercury exposure.

Bottom line: don't mess with it, and don't let your kids mess with it. If you have mercury thermometers in the home, it's a good idea to see if you can provide them to proper hazardous waste disposal authorities and replace them with accurate digital thermometers (which my toddlers like a LOT better, anyway).

Agreed about the POWs.

We have two in our area, and it was a shock that they released the status (507th) before anybody knew about it.

They suck.
