They could left Baghdad in protest of Iraq's treatment of journalists, but would we have gotten a full a picture as we did got? How much did a fuller picture contribute to the end result?

It doesn't seem to so clear to me that CNN can be accused of complicity here.

While I do not doubt that the author has suffered by knowing these horrors and feeling the need to not report them, there is an extremely self-serving, a nauseatingly almost self-congratulatory, odor to this piece. Even the headline stinks.

Did I miss something? The last paragraph says:

Where the hell are they broadcasting from Abu-Dabi? Last I checked there was genuine, unadulterated freedom of the press in Atlanta...

They always had the freedom to tell these stories. They haven't, apparently, had the courage or the character to actually share them with us until now. Not sure what he was trying to accomplish with the article but he'll probably get a pulitzer for sharing his angst...

I have read this article several times. Probably as are all here, I am floored. Does the NY Times understand what they have just printed? This will be a document studied by future historians. It's an unwitting and horrifying distillation of the perversity within the minds of outwardly good people. He might as well have written, "I was just following orders."

I came to know several Iraqi officials well enough that they confided in me that Saddam Hussein was a maniac who had to be removed.

And yet CNN reports as if Saddam is the victim and Iraq is being invaded for the basest of reasons.
