I live in Middleton, NH most of the time and work in Mass, the average wage in the town is $35,000, I pay the same property Tax as my on house in Mass, one is valued at $150,000 the other is $350,000. When I retire most of my income will come from unearned income, I am going to ask Eternal Vigalence if I can rent a room from him in SD.</p.

The saving point in NH is that they have no death tax, then again neither does SD.

No, "the great society" encouraged the use of big government to help out the impoverished rural areas and they grew addicted. At one time 30% of the population was getting food stamps.

I can't think of one program they didn't turn down as long as it had matching fed money attached to it. They took up reverse direction turn outs for federal $$$ because some study said it reduced accidents, they are everywhere.

Now things are so bad, we are loosing a mill a week and there aren't too many left.

Then catholic charities decided they could make money off the somali immigrants, so here they came.

Universal Health Care is next (Dirigo health), it is being "paid for" by a shift in free care $$$ and a 4% tax on health insurance. When that doesn't work it comes out of general revenue.

Then there is Olympia Snowe who is angry because she considers tax cuts an expense to government, and can't understand the concept of tax cuts and why can't you give tax cuts to people who don't pay taxes. Remember only 50% of the population of Maine works. Of those that work, 30% don't earn enough to pay federal tax. I think you get the idea.

Just my opinion here.....If in fact the smoking ban has increased business in some establishments as the politicans express, why haven't the businesses "on their own" kicked out the smokers and put up "No Smoking Signs" to increase their revenue.......

How is it that Massachusetts seems to be such a stodgy socially conservative state in culture while we have such raving liberals for government and laws? I go to Dallas and see vice I would never see in Boston? I go to even Nashville and see a rip roaring night life that one would think would not exist in the Bible belt. While in Boston- if your lucky- you will see a bar fight at closing time!

You don't go to the right places. The only thing more conservitive than a left behind Yankee is a Boston Irishman, Lace Curtin type that is. You should have been in Butte, Montania when I was a kid or in Park City, Utah when my father was a kid, wide open mining town, 28 murders in a town of 2000, a year, my Aunt told me they had to walk through the Red light district to go to Church, still active on a Sunday moring. This is Utah of all places.

Mass is conservitive in some ways.

The bill calling for new rules restricting smoking where foster children live and ride was weakened from the original version, which would have imposed a flat-out ban in those surroundings.

Foster parents are already in short supply, guess they have better start building childrens homes again.

Typical Bostonian confusion. Coppersfields is right down from Fenway Park in the South End (not Southie). It is the biggest "fight" bar in Boston and has been closed so many times I can't count.

I have lived in NYC, Stamford, and Hartford- and only in Boston do I get that "fight" vibe! Does Boston have a "fight" thing because there are "tribes" from Southie, the North End, Charlestown, and then the Suburbs all coming into Boston in groups of 5 to 10 looking for trouble? Boston is a "fight prone city". I never saw a bar fight in NYC, Stamford, or Hartford. I came back to Boston and saw three in one night.

Info "Supposedly" Reporting that "Second-Hand Smoke" is a "Health Hazard" has Proven to be "Spurious!" WHAT A SURPRISE!!

Other "Atmospheric Pollutants" are FAR MORE Dangerous to our Collective Health than "Second-Hand Smoke!!"

Somehow, "REALITY", just seems to be capable of Intruding FACT into "Politically Correct Fantasy" REGARDLESS of the Beliefs of Those Who would Like to Promote a Political Agenda!

If the "ANTI-SMOKING ZEALOTS" wish to foment Their Agenda,--They should Lobby for a TOTAL BAN on Tobacco!

Either MAKE the Substance ILLEGAL (Like Marihuana, Heroin, Cocaine, Amphetamines, PCP, Mescaline, & a LOT of other "Psychoactive Drugs,"), or SHUT UP--& let the "Market" regulate the Substance They Fear!!

All Their "Regulations" accomplish is Greater Revenues for the Government!

Making a Substance (Tobacco), "Quasi-Legal" ONLY creates a Parasitic "Regulatory Agency" whose SOLE EXISTENCE Depends on a LAW (However Spurious), Created for the Sole Purpose to Justify a "Regulatory Agency!!"

Nearly All "Second-Hand Smoke" data indicates that there is NO RISK from "Second-Hand Smoke!!"

So "Regulations" on the "Use of Public Space" are NOT based on Scientific Data;-these so-called "Regulations" are mostly based on ARROGANCE & WHIM!! (WHAT a Surprise!!)

It Seems that "Local Politics" is--as usual--driven by the Personalities of Those who Covet Office!

If Your Local "Town Fathers" Ban "Smoking," you can expect a LARGE "Drop in Revenue;" as with "Prohibition," the "Social Geniuses" who are attempting to regulate a Natural Human Behavior are about to create a Culturally "Transforming" event!!

You are right about fighting in bars, I lived in NYC also, only saw one in Brooklin, saw alot down South in my travels. It could be an Irish or Scots Irish thing.

I spent a good portion of my youth in Lynn and Peabody, after 10 PM was a bad time to stop for a beer after work.

Quit the charade, sheesh. Why not ask if they vote Republican, play golf or own a firearm too. All sorts of abhorrent behaviour can be modified in this very same way. It's for the children, you know.
