Right or wrong, that incident has remained in my mind's eye as clearly now as it did then. I don't know how people can do that to themselves. My guess is that they don't fathom how bad its gonna be. Has anyone done a survey of the grotesquely self-burned to see if they would do it again?

Here's a guy that set himself on fire. I'm all for protesting, but, to light myself on fire? I don't think so.
I'm burnin', I'm burnin', I'm burnin' for you

State ownership of the means of jihad, comrade Imam!

Obviously more proof that Islam is a religion of peace and that suicide is against their religion.

From the National Council of Resistance of Iran's website:
http://www.iran-e-azad.org/english/ncri.html The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCR) was founded in July 1981 in Tehran to oppose the fundamentalist regime ruling Iran and establish a pluralist democracy. Eventually, the Council moved its headquarters to Paris. In late 1981 and early 1982, the NCR drafted, adopted and published its principal positions and the outline of the future government's programs after the overthrow of the mullahs' regime.1 The council quickly expanded to include all democratic forces opposed to the Khomeini regime and not responsible for any crimes during the Shah's reign. The NCR continues to keep its doors open to such forces
and public figures.
Also see the caption in post 4:
National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) which opposes the Islamic government in Tehran...
So yes, Maryam Rajavi and her compatriots are liberal in a country where everyone is liberal in comparison to the fundamentalist mullahs.
I don't know however, if she is a leftist and therein lies the distinction that is sometimes not made in the media.

You have to ask yourself.... If the photographer was there and knew that this was going to take place shouldn't he have had a fire exstinguisher in his hands instead of a camera? I Mean who could stand by and watch this and not stop it... even if they are idiots... and they are since none have been to a burn unit and seen they suffering of those people. I imagine if these protestors had been to a burn unit they would have decided a little less painful and deadly protest.

As much anger, hate and rage as I have for murderous Muslims and Islamic terrorists, for 9-11 and previous terroristic bombings and murders, I'm *deeply saddened* that someone is so wacked-out and fanatical that they would do this... to that shiny, nice little car. Damn, get the rubbing compound, Achmed! Mo-ham-head's gonna be po'd.

That's a sick picture but you have to ask why the hell they are grabbing and carrying this person by her hands and legs?

There was a big controversy about ten years ago in, I believe Pittsburgh. I mentally disturbed man called a newspaper writer and said he was setting himself on fire in a park.
Of course the reporter told no one but his photographer and the pair ran to the park in time to film the man setting himself on fire then, after a minute or so, tried to put out the fire.
Everyone was appalled as the reporter was more interested int the story then stopping this guy from lighting himself up.

I think you're right -- they are the enemies of our enemies but NOT our friends.

Doesn't anyone even have any interest in why France might be rounding up left-wing Iranians? Is France carrying water for the current rulers of Iran? This is especially strange since the French government is composed of a bunch of commies. I think you're onto something...

Are they pulling her burqua off or is she fending off a Star Wars jawa?

What do you expect from the country that harbored the Ayatollah Khomeini FOR 15 YEARS.

Is France carrying water for the current rulers of Iran? That was my first suspicion, also. Left-wing or not, these people are exiles in France because they oppose the mullahocracy.
De Villepin has made trips to Tehran, the Franch (of course) are supporting another hated ME regime. It's odd the round-up started not long after de Villepin's last visit. I wonder if the next step will be deportation back to Iran?

What on earth is wrong with you? These people have been denied freedom for decades and this woman just used the only thing she had to draw the world's attention to it. You might find it amusing that someone would care enough about freedom to burn themselves alive, but I don't think it's very funny at all.
To: McGavin999
I can think of better ways to attract attention.
She's nuts not only by setting herself on fire but by trying to find freedom in France.
