Sources: Bryant incident began consensually
Randy Wyrick
An alleged sexual assault by Los Angeles Laker guard Kobe Bryant began consensually, but quickly turned otherwise, sources said Wednesday.
Sources said Bryant asked the alleged victim, a 19-year-old Eagle woman, for a tour of the Lodge & Spa at Cordillera, which ended at his room, and that he invited her in.
Sources said that after she was inside they started "fooling around," and that it began consensually, but she quickly told him to stop.
"She was trying to leave and was not allowed to leave," one source told the Daily.
About 20 minutes later, the alleged victim returned to the hotel lobby in a shocked stupor, showing signs of physical injury, sources said. Bryant showed up in the lobby later that night to play chess, sources said.
Sources told the Daily that Bryant and his three-man entourage, two bodyguards and a personal manager, all went to different rooms. The bodyguards' room was registered to Michael Ortiz, sources said. Ortiz was one of the members of Bryant's entourage who was driven to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, where Bryant had already been taken to provide DNA samples.
Sources described the bodyguards as two African-American men, and said that one was an off-duty Los Angeles police officer.
Changing his story
Sources also said Bryant changed his story, insisting repeatedly that he did not have sex with the alleged victim. About 11:30 p.m., July 1, the day of his knee surgery at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic, he was interrogated by Eagle County authorities, reportedly with an attorney present, and purportedly changed his story, admitting he had sex with the young woman.
After District Attorney Mark Hurlbert charged him with one count of felony sexual assault on July 18, Bryant admitted making "the mistake of adultery," but said he was innocent of the felony sexual assault charges Hurlbert filed against him.
Hurlbert said he had no idea where the leak could have come from. He said he keeps his case file locked in a safe. Attempts to reach Bryant's attorneys, Pamela Mackey and Harold Haddon, Wednesday night were unsuccessful.
Happened quickly
Bryant and his entourage checked in at the Lodge & Spa at Cordillera between 10:10 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. All the workers on that shift, including the alleged victim, clocked out by 11:10 p.m.
"Five minutes is enough," said Dr. Janine D'Anniballe of Boulder, director of the Movement to End Sexual Assault. "I've seen assaults take place in way less time than that."
The story was receiving nationwide play by Wednesday night, burning up the airwaves on radio talk shows and television news channels.
It also was scheduled to be the star attraction of the network TV shows this morning, and is certain to be the topic of conversations across the country.

If Bryant thought he was guilty of no more than adultery, is there a good explanation for why he would have lied to the police? Like the $4 million ring, it looks like evidence that he was aware he had committed more than adultery.

Interesting. This is pretty much what I thought happened. Just couldn't take no for an answer. It's rape. Buh, bye, Kobe meat.

Guilty. Consenting to one form of sex doesn't give you a pass to any type of sex you can think of. That's nuts. Forcing a person to do anything is wrong. Should I be able to MAKE my date eat dog meat because she consented to have dinner with me? If she consents to traditional sex is it OK to bring a friend along. The line is drawn at "no." After that it's a crime.

Doesn't sound like that California case involved nearly as much violence as Bryant's. And I understand Colorado rape law is much more pro-victim that California's. Yes, the incident in the story I posted occurred at a party at a residence. The female involved voluntarily engaged in sexual contact with two males before "withdrawing consent" she claimed. The males came and went from the room several times. The female was free to leave as well. The males were still convicted. It is also interesting to note that the female "didn't know she was raped" until her parents said so. Contrast this with the alleged incident with Kobe and his accuser. The rumors indicate force and injury. Based upon the rumors and the court decisions regarding "withdrawn consent", this doesn't look that good for Kobe.
To: AppyPappy
I think a more likely story is that the women involved here is a mentally deranged, lying whore who has become a young hag. She is one who did not have a gun or knife to her head. She could have ran out of that room or just yelled "Help, I'm being RAPED" at the top of her lungs if she did not want to have sex that night.

I'd bet the story is that she consented to everything they did that night, but she did not feel too good about it afterwards. She went home and told her mother about what she had done and about the regrets she had. As the night went on, she became angry and ashamed of herself for what she had done, so she decided to project her self-hatred onto Kobe; and, therefore, taking all responsibility for her own actions away from herself.

Since I don't have cable or television and have to rely on the news I read. I did not know she had been slapped around and suffocated by a pillow during the entire alleged attack. I've been reading that after the rendezvous, she left the room and saw a number of people before leaving the hotel that she never went to and asked for help. They say she seemed to be flushed and tired out -as from experiencing a good go at it.

This is exactly what I've speculated happened because they were with him for HOURS before escorting him to get the DNA samples. I offered this theory to those who insisted Bryant had "always" admitted sex with the accuser.
We'll see if this is the testimony, though. I will hold off accepting it as precise at this time, but I find this is most likely what he did.
The chess playing later that night sounds weird. I wonder if it's mixed up with earlier reports that he played chess in the lobby after the knee surgery. After all, he ordered a movie from his room at 12:36, so I find the chess in lobby in middle of night scene unlikely to be reported accurately. But maybe he played chess in the lobby in the middle of the night and the next day. Unlikely though.

Heard on WMAL radio in D.C. while I was just out for lunch: authorities are considering whether to release records concerning a couple of 911 calls made from the Bryants' Newport Beach home in early July.
To: aristeides
Here is what I posted on
this thread:
Whoa. I'm listening to the radio (Rush, who for a change is right on target today) and the ABC news at the top of the hour just reported on 911 calls.
One was made by Kobe Bryant on July 3, the night before he flew back to be arrested. The call was made and then the person hung up and the dispatcher called the number back. That's all I got.
I hope there's an article giving more detail on that.
507 posted on 07/31/2003 10:02 AM PDT by cyncooper
Then at post #514 I posted what I heard at the top of the next hour:
OK, ABC radio news just repeated (paraphrasing, but as close as I can get it to how she said it):
"ABC news has learned that two 911 calls were placed from Kobe Bryant's home over the past year, including the day before he was arrested."
They had more world and war news in this news segment so truncated the original report I had heard. But I had heard correctly: There were calls from his home. I'm going to speculate that the ring was indeed a payoff to hush up any domestic violence history.

I've Googled and looked at ABC news but can't find a written report yet.

It's just my impression of what she looked like coming out of his room based on the information I've read. I've read ominous sounding statements like "...when she came out of his room, you could tell something had happened." If she came out his room after having a passionate-romantic escapade, a flushed look would explain the "...you could tell something had happened" look.

Discussing this on Fox. Sales of Kobe's jerseys have increased since the arrest. I saw an attractive young white blonde -- couldn't have been any older than 17 -- wearing a Kobe jersey days after the charges. I actually turned around to ask why she was wearing it, but thought better of it.

The $4,000,000 lilac diamond ring was commissioned weeks before the alleged incident occurred. Rings like that cannot be designed, cut, and assembled within 24 hours. It takes a a lot of time.
When the ring was ready, KB picked it up. And maybe, unexpectedly, the ring did serve as a "forgive me, I'll never do it again" bribe at that point. But I don't see how that ring was intentionally commissioned for the Eagle incident.

But if she didn't *know* she was raped until the next morning, why did she go to bed without first taking a shower? Is she in the habit of having sex, driving home and going straight to bed without first washing up (and destroying or contaminating evidence)? I think she knew, unless she was dumb as rocks - which might still be the case from everything else we've heard about her.

She knew she was raped. Here is the lastest quote.
Randy Wyrick, of The Vail Daily, told the "Today" show that "they (Bryant and the alleged victim) began fooling around, as it were, and that part was consensual. She said 'no' shortly thereafter. She had enough. One of our sources also said she was trying to leave and was not allowed to leave."
Wyrick also said that his sources told him that the alleged victim then turned up in the lobby in "a stupor" and with visible physical injuries. He also said that Bryant initially denied even knowing the victim.

Mentally deranged: she has "tried" to commit suicide at least twice in recent months. Family, friends, and police all say she is danger to herself at times, or she creates such scenarios to gain attention to herself.
Lying whore: it has been said that she had numerous "overnighters" with many different guys during her last school semester. After such encounters, she was known to have bragged about her sexual escapades. It is also expected that she has made a number of bogus 911 calls. Bogus 911 calls + numerous overnighters with many different men = lying whore.
