I guess Demo.
'Sumptuary' reminds me of part of the 'states rights' mantra.

Well to tell the truth I had never seen it so I did have to look it up
Sumptuary laws or regulations, laws intended to restrain or limit the expenditure of citizens in apparel, food, furniture, etc.; laws which regulate the prices of commodities and the wages of labor; laws which forbid or restrict the use of certain articles, as of luxurious apparel.

"Dream on of nixonian triumphs. The man was a political disaster."Do you mean "ideological" disaster? Surely you aren't knocking his landslide 1972 victory as a political disaster. As far as political wins go, that was huge.
As for his triumphs, they were few. But I merely posted them to refute your wild-eyed claim that the whole nation "lost" under Nixon.

Thank God I'm a monarchist.
We're voting Eisenhower in 2004... just like we do every election year.

I can only hope that the Bushbots/RINOs move in this direction...fat chance"This Administration has failed to honor its pledges to assure good jobs, full prosperity and a rapidly growing economy for all the American people:
--failing to reduce unemployment to 4 percent falling far short of its announced goal every single month of its tenure in office; and
--despite glowing promises, allowing a disheartening increase in long-term and youth unemployment.
It has allowed the deterioration of the domestic mining and petroleum industries including displacement of domestic markets by foreign imports.
It has, despite pledges of economy, burdened this nation with four unbalanced budgets in a row, creating deficits totaling 26 billion dollars, with still more debt to come, reflecting a rate of sustained deficit spending unmatched in peacetime.

She was a real lady.
Trapped in a marriage to a real political nightmare. - Nixons basic weirdness was obvious back in '60, with his famous 'kick around dick' whine.
His '68 nomination was, and still is, one of the most bizarre political acts ~ever~ of the GOP. The back room boys HAD to have known the man was flawed.

I liked Ike.
He was my Commander in Chief. And the best clerk that MacArthur ever had.

There have been postings of the 1892 and 1904 Republican Party Platforms; they both speak to protecting American trade and jobs. Here are portions of 1964 and 1968 on trade:
1964
4. We hold that trade with Communist countries should not be directed toward the enhancement of their power and influence but could only be justified if it would serve to diminish their power.
5. We are opposed to the recognition of Red China. We oppose its admission into the United Nations. We steadfastly support free China.
1968
maintain a favorable balance of trade and balance of payments
...
It remains the policy of the Republican Party to work toward freer trade among all nations of the free world. But artificial obstacles to such trade are a serious concern. We promise hard-headed bargaining to lower the non-tariff barriers against American exports and to develop a code of fair competition, including international fair labor standards, between the United States and comparable principal trading partners.
A sudden influx of imports can endanger many industries. These problems, differing in each industry, must be considered case by case. Our guideline will be fairness for both producers and workers, without foreclosing imports.
Thousands of jobs have been lost to foreign producers because of discriminatory and unfair trade practices.
The State Department must give closest attention to the development of agreements with exporting nations to bring about fair competition. Imports should not be permitted to capture excessive portions of the American market but should, through international agreements, be able to participate in the growth of consumption.
Should such efforts fail, specific countermeasures will have to be applied until fair competition is re-established. Tax reforms will also be required to preserve the competitiveness of American goods.
The basis for determining the value of imports and exports must be modified to reflect true dollar value.

We have a photo of Ike hanging in our hallway. It's right next to the framed front page of
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition from June 6, 1944.
Although neither of us were born at the time, our house itself was built in 1952. In our house it's still 1952 in a good many ways.
The years 1947-1962 will no doubt someday be referred to as "America's Golden Age". Despite polio, Krushchev, and segregation, I'm sorry I missed it.

'I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden.'IMHO, FREEDOM in a nutshell - someone failing to abide by them is NOT a conservative.

Anybody want to take a guess which platform of the two this came from in 1892?The real conservatives before the great flip-flop of the parties.

Don't get too starry eyed. It was a pretty repressive society in some ways. Panty girdles were the devils work.

On my Desk is a Barry Goldwater campaign doll from his presidential run.
He was a conservative running in the republican party.
Today the republican party does not have many conservatives.
99% are like McCain or Jeffords or Snow or Specter or Bush.

At the '68 GOP convention, there was a group of black women marching around, all obviously pregnant, carrying signs saying "Nixon's the One".
