This is primarily why I left California for good back in the late 1970s. I saw it -- especially Southern California -- succumbing to Mexification. Your in Illinios? As I said, where you going to run to next?
The INS estimated in February 2003 that there were 432,000 illegal aliens residing in Illinois. This was more than double the INS estimate of 176,000 illegal immigrants in Illinois in October 1992.
The current INS estimate indicates that Illinois has the fourth largest illegal alien population in the country.

Thanks for posting.
Here's a timely related article posted here:
States pay $7.4 billion to educate illegals
Washington Times 8/21/03
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/967750/posts "California spends an estimated $2.2 billion annually more than any other state to educate illegal immigrant children. Texas and New York rank second and third, respectively."
And that's just education. Health, welfare, housing, transportation, police, etc.
And the "Spanish speaking only" crews at hotels, construction, fast food, restaurants, janitorial, canneries, mean that English speaking unemployed American citizens, remain unemployed.
The costs are enormous.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but some of you are either ignoring or are ignorant of the fact that this invasion of millions WAS isolated to the southwest 20 years ago. This epic invasion is no longer isolated to Cal, Texas and Arizona. It's now in your hometown...We have friends in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio etc, and it's the same thing, they are being overrun...
This is a "Federal Government approved" attack on our borders and our sovereignty......

Thanks for the ping. I read part of the article and agree with Hansen to that point. I'll check out the rest later. I appreciate your bringing this thread to my attention.

Agreed. It is an illegal occupation by foreign forces.
Whether armed or not, these people are squatting on and claiming new soil for their beloved country Mexico.

I didn't realize he was a dem. I've heard him interviewed by Brit Hume and I think he's one of the most articulate people I've ever heard (he and Dennis Ross). I really appreciate his knowledge of and wisdom regarding the lessons from history.

Who's heard of John OSullivan ?
Not me; this issue has been brought to the fore by popular thinkers and writers such as Victor Davis Hanson, Micheele Malkin, Peter Brimelow (I remember his article in The Atlantic), as well as cantankerous media such as Michael Savage, and innovative citizens like Glenn Spencer.
The Republican Party had better get in front of his issue and quit being afraid of the race-baiting demagogues on the left.
Gray Davis is going down, in part because of his pandering to this issue, with the resultant ballooning budget in California.
All in all, no one has applied the critical thinking and moral analysis like Hanson.
He is a national treasure for the morally based decondtruction he performs on the multi-cultral leftist fantasies that got us into this mess.

George Putnam ... has been screaming about this problem for over thirty years on Southern California radio. You are so right.
I left him out; he's an old style Democrat who loves his country and possesses common sense.

"its our land anyway", harkens to what will probably become a Kosovo situation. When our glorious immigrants have the numbers they will begin an ethnic cleansing campaign in which low rent thugs threaten and intimidate non-Mexicans on a large scale and the law enforcement officials look the other way or join in on the thuggery. First they will start with poor or working class Americans that live in the country then they will work towards the wealthier soccer mom suburbs. But never worry our GOP stalwarts will at every possible moment remind us that CA and the "Hispanic" vote is still in play.

CALIFORNIA - A compromise bill that would enable illegal immigrants to acquire a California driver's license - but also charge all motorists an estimated $330 million a year in higher license fees - shot through a pivotal Assembly committee Wednesday without discussion or public testimony. -- On a 16-to-7 party-line vote, majority Democrats on the Appropriations Committee overwhelmed Republicans to send the proposal to the full Assembly for a vote...

I agree with this in part, and disagree in part. I agree that children born to border violators or illegal aliens should not have US citizenship by virtue of birth here (unless one parent is an American citizen) BUT, I believe that the children of any legal alien resident in the US should be granted citizenship by circumstance of birth. That creates a huge incentive to have legal status, and will probably result in the sort of immigrant citizens we want anyway. I know several legal resident aliens (green cards) whose children were born here and are citizens. They are staying in the US (productively so) because the kids are American citizens and want them to grow up here. Good parents, good kids, they just don't want to give up their old citizenship just yet. I have no problem with that.

The Republican Party had better get in front of his issue and quit being afraid of the race-baiting demagogues on the left. Exactly. And that includes President Bush. He seems to think Hispanics are assimilating like the old-time immigrants. We weren't so accomodating back then. As long as the United States doesn't require immigrants to learn the English language, they won't assimilate.
It seems to me Asian immigrants try to learn the language and don't expect government (We, The People) to take care of them. Those who are anti-assimilation (Rats, mostly) see Hispanics as a new voting bloc ripe for dependency upon a change to a socialist government.

I used to hear Victor Davis Hanson on Hugh Hewitt's show frequently. I wonder why he wasn't invited on his show to promote this book? Or did I perchance miss it?
