Students immediate freedom expected

Tehran, Sept 2 - President Mohammad Khatami here on Tuesday expressed hope that the students who have been arrested during the June unrest would be released soon, stressing that the students must not be misused for factional infighting.

Khatami, speaking at the Majlis in defense of his proposed minister of science, research and technology Reza Faraji-Dana, said he was sorry that a few students are still held in detention, adding that their release would be a present to the new science minister.

He thanked MPs Mohsen Safaei Farahani and Mohammad-Hassan Aboutorabi for their efforts to follow up the case of the detained students and set the ground for their release, stressing that students should not be treated the same way as the rioters.
< BR> Khatami highlighted the remarks by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, to stress encouraging students to involve themselves in political issues, and said however that the students must be prudent not to fall tar get of factional bickering.

"Those who do not advocate politicizing universities want a dead university and a cold and lifeless society," he said.

"Let me be frank -- the students have many concerns, and they possibly feel humiliated. And humiliating students and lecturers is a blow to the Islamic Republic."

Khatami said politics lie within the nature of universities, adding that the status of students is too high to be swayed by the provocations of outsider institutions or power camps.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president recalled the role of universities and students in the triumph of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88, stressing that university students had always been the forerunners of protecting Ira n's territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

It seems to be a joke!!!
They had arrested more than 4000 innocent students and people in 10 days, and now we are hearing that " A FEW ARE IN PRISON ".

They have not accepted the fact that there are many Hezbollahs, one of which is now growing in Iraq, under the leadership of the young Sheikh Muqtada al-Sadr, who was named chief of Iraqi Hezbollah by Iran's strongman Mohammed Hashemi Rafsanjani several months ago. And, as luck would have it, the young sheikh just happened to be absent from Friday prayers at the shrine of Ali when the car bombs went off.

What a coincidence
