As Rush L. just pointed out the SCOTUS last avoided state election issues as they came up in the Torricelli race.

What a total pile of crap. The latest numbers I just heard on Fox News was that the ruling covers counties that represent 44% of California voters. If this ruling covers 44% of voters, how could it be strictly disenfranchising minority voters? Do they give different punch card ballots to white people?

Where was the ACLU just this last Fall when Gray-out Davis was re-elected? After all, the same punch card system was used for that election.

Furthermore, woudl the ACLU even be involved if Gray-out was way ahead in all the polls? I don't think so.

And on to my own personal thoughts on voting in general - If you cannot vote properly on any of the current systems (assuming that it's not a computer ballot that has lots of software bugs like they have experienced in Little Rock, Arkansas), then you probably don't have the mental capacity to vote in the first place. This is especially true with the help that is available at 99.9% of polling places (that are often staffed with volunteers who are quite liberal....).

Are these liberal judges trying to say that minorities are idiots or retarded? After all, the minorities are supposedly the only ones who get disenfranchised by these ballots....

"outmoded punchcard ballots". Is was okay in FL, until algore lost, now its the means of "last ditch" effort to save graydavis.

I recall Congressman Billybob saying that SCOTUS will probably act on an emergency basis on this one. It will probably be overturned quickly.

All the polls have been saying that this is the most closely watched election in a long time.....maybe a lot of folks that were paying attn will now go back to baseball and football and think that the race is off til next year. If this gets overturned and put back on, the Dems may just have deflated their own turnout.....And Bustamante is now faced with a really long campaign and limited fundraising ability (except from the gaming tribes which is a liability).

I'm in Georgia's 6th Distict. Newt was my Congressman. It is a very white/upper middle class area. Homes are in the 400,000 - 600,000 range.

My polling place last election was PUNCH CARDS!
In the twelve years I have lived in Georgia I have always used PUNCH CARDS. Last election the inner city got the computers and I was left with PUNCH CARDS.

I was able to vote with PUNCH CARDS without any difficulty.

Another thing to keep in mind... campaign finance rules prohibit donations to any of the people running for Governor to $21,200/person. On the other hand, there are absolutely NO spending restrictions on Gray Davis and his "NO ON RECALL" campaign. With another 6 months to pander to the unions, indian casinos, public employee coalitions and reap the rewards with many $1M donations, Davis will be able to dominate the airways with his campaign - while the challengers must now make their paltry campaign funds stretch another 6 months.

Brilliant insight. This should be the reason SCOTUS overturns the decision.

(I bet they refuse to hear it.)

Minority voters would be disenfranchised due to old equipment. Injunction blocking the recall election.

Better: Minority voters disenfranchised due to stupidity!!

For the record for all, the US Supreme Court has appellate jurisdiction over both federal circuit courts of appeals and state supreme courts.

Watching Clinton strutting through a black church is like watching Mr. Charley stroll down from the plantation house to the slave cabins to get some brown sugar.

Hearing on FOX per their legal analyst that what can happen next is that the ENTIRE 9th Circuit count (35 members he said) can be brought to decide if this partial court decision will stand.

This court has ruled against the Justice Dept per the Voters Rights Act.

Hoping Freepers will comment on these issues.

I hope this just blows up in their faces - I don't care whose, so long as it helps the republicans.

It better! They are busily turing California intoanotehr Venzuala ... this is an "ALL IN" poker play. Win or Lose. We cant back down or come 2006, Busta-move will be (re)elected with huge numbers of 'votes' from his SB60-created voters.

We should demand of Davis "Do the right thing - Resign!" Let's see if he has the balls to do and let Busta-move take over .. (this is their plan B to stop a GOP takeover).

They refused to take the New Jersey case with Torrecelli saying it was a state's issue.

Applese and Organges. If it's a "states" issue why did a Federal Court just intervene?
