What do Jews believe about Heaven and Hell?

Posted on 01/19/2005 1:37:38 PM PST by kingsurfer

I have been wondering about this for a few weeks since someone said that they believe most go to heaven and only the really bad seeds go to hell?

Any views?

Someday every knee will bow down and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is King of Kings and Lord of Lords..

Until the Captivity Judaism apparantly had no beliefs whatsoever about an "afterlife". It just wasn't an issue.

One theory is that the "afterlife" business was imported out of Zorastrianism and other Persian belief systems.

Another theory is some otherwise unknown Jewish prophet had a revelation.

A third theory is that an "afterlife" was part of the oral or folk religion which existed parallel to official Judaism which took place at the Temple. There's some evidence for that inasmuch as even David had household gods ~ see the story about the statuary he placed in his bed to fool an attacker. ~

You might consult a rabbi with a good knowledge of Jewish history to see what Jews belief. Fur Shur, by the time you get to St. Paul, it's a pretty complex belief.

Yes there is.

It's a place where you can only buy retail.

"...or that wicked souls are simply destroyed at death, ceasing to exist."

But for sheol, and the musing of the Prophets, "If I knew Him I'd be Him."

Ever hear of Sheol? Read through some of the Psalms and you find several references to it. You should also read the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. There was definately a concept of Hell in the Jewish religion.

That's a lot closer to the concept of "purgatory"... but there is no hell in Judaism, trust me on this one... or if you won't take me at my word on it, follow the link Mojo posted above.

Jews could get alot from Jesus as rabbi. Though another great rabbi was Maimonides (1135-1204), whose second and third of his "Thirteen Principles of The Jewish Faith", namely God's Unity and God's Incorporeality, pose great challenges to the corporeality of God.

Impossible. If you're a Jew you don't believe in the divinity of Christ.
