As one who grew up with the lie that "the wine in Jesus day wasn't fermented like ours, it was more like grape juice" I really need to just stop right here and say get over yourself.
If, for whatever reason, you choose not to drink, fine. So be it.
But if you are reading prohibition into the Bible, then you are NOT understanding the Bible, no matter what translation you read.
Drunkenness is condemned. Drinking is not.
At the Last Supper, Jesus didn't say "here, take this, you'll feel better in the morning." He said the wine represented his blood. It was wine. The real stuff.
Prohibition against alcohol is really an American fundamentalist/holiness/legalistic phenomenon. We wouldn't be having this conversation in just about any other country in the world.
No, it's only all the same to meddlesome busibodies who can't mind their own business.
Grape juice could not be kept without refrigeration. Any fruit of the vine would, by definition, ferment. Gee, sounds like wine to me.
Proverbs 20:1 ¶Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Proverbs 21:17 ¶He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
Proverbs 20:1 ¶Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Proverbs 21:17 ¶He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
The world called Jesus a winebibber, and you don't think they think worse about you?
One of the more intriguing experiences I had when I attended a church descended from German Baptists was when the pastor handed me a beer after we played 18 holes. Definately not what the Plymouth Brethren boy was used to.
Your problem is your proof-texting. Spend sometime reading the Bible as a complete work. Not a "cut and paste to prove my point" reference paper.
Never go fishing with just one Baptist.
If you do, he'll drink all the beer.
Proverbs 23:29 ¶Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
At my age, I have read the Bible many times over.
How does it feel to be a poster boy for the liberal caricature of a joyless, judgmental, narrow-minded religious nut?
I know for a fact they don't. And, by the way, the world didn't call Jesus a drunkard. It was the fundamentalist Pharisees.
It feels just lovely. I expect the world and the worldy to hate me, Jesus said they would.
But I am not a boy, so I can't speak to that part.
Matthew 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
The Catholics recognize the Pope, but the Anglicans don't.
Baptists don't recognize each other in the liquor store.
The didn't call him a drunkard!
They said he was a winebibber!!!
Nothing like boasting, eh?
"Never go fishing with just one Baptist. If you do, he'll drink all the beer."
One more crack like that and I ping the mod.
If you want to drink and party with the unsaved and call that a good Christian testimony, what do you base that on?
Do you talk about redemption from sin over beer?
