Exactly. Those who get obssessed with it - i.e., addicted. The guy I know who drops $100/wk. at bars is definately a poster boy for that verse.
But, those guys don't demonstrate moderation and liberty.
Don't ping the mod.
I don't mind the humor.
This baptist doesn't drink so their comments have no effect on me.
Actually, I have.
Tarrying long could mean once, or 20 times, it doesn't say addicted.
But no one would ever be addicted if they never took that first drink.
You are exactly like the Pharisee "who prayed within himself." Precisely. You know, the type that Jesus had little use for.
And your results?
Do you win many people to the Lord while drinking with them?
I do want to commend you for this.
I think you and I signed up within a few days of each other. I've been around long enough to be a veteran of the MFJ.
I don't do notches in the belt.
"Don't ping the mod.

I wasn't referring to you, I was protecting me. If it gets out that I drink all the beer no one will go fishing with me anymore.
Genesis 14:18
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Genesis 27:28
Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:
Numbers 18:12
All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto the LORD, them have I given thee.
Numbers 28:7
And the drink offering thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be poured unto the LORD for a drink offering.
Deuteronomy 7:13
And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
Psalm 104:15
And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart.
Proverbs 31:6
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
Ecclesiastes 9:7
Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.
John 2:3
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
John 4:46
So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
Now that is funny.
1 Peter 1:13
¶Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Now that was funny.
True. That leaves no room, however, for enjoying the gift of God that he gave to gladden his heart.
The one who abstains for the glory of God does right. The one who partakes in moderation, giving thanks to God for it, also does right.
Invite all the people you want. As long as you pick up the tab.
That means those that are just about dead and those that wish they were. Are you in either of those categories?
And I'll tell you that I have geek friends who tell me I'm the first Christian who hasn't told them their hobbies were evil and therefore the first Christian they'd talk to or listen to. I have Christian friends who have become saved since I knew them who tell me that my witness - showing them it's possible to be a Christian and still like video games or RPGs or science fiction novels or anime or what have you - opened their minds to the possibility that there actually is something to Christianity.
So don't try those little one-size-fits-all statements. Just because it was true for you doesn't mean it is true for my friends.
With my life?
Frequently.
1Pe. 1:13-15 is irrelevant to this discussion. That's not what the Greek word for "sober" meant. That referred to seriousness of action.
But if you have had a few beers, it's hard to be sober.
