Twain states clearly he could be wrong. The "preponderance of 'Mary' threads" does nothing to "prove" Catholics worship Mary.

They do prove though that many Catholics devote an extraordinary amount of time to Mary.

They are, however, filled with evidence of anti-Catholic hate.

Sometimes, but I wouldn't say that's the motivation of 90% of the participants.

Not so.

What they actually prove is that many Catholics here devote an extraordinary amount of time to defending our beliefs about Mary against the many lies told about us and our faith.

I concur with your #3, wintertime.

And though I’m not Catholic, I believe that Catholics have indeed made great contributions to this country (including my parents, most of my relatives, and most of my teachers).

Do you believe in the Trinity?

You're going to have to be a little more specific. I believe that the bible teaches that the father and son compose the Godhead and that the Holy Spirit is the presence of the father and son on earth and in their people.

Using secular English dictionaries is not a good way to look at Catholic teachings and worship practices. Such is the burden of existing for 2000 years, long before English as we know it even approached it's modern usage.

See: Latria versus Dulia

We believe the Church is whole, and that those who have fallen asleep in Christ are now members of the Church Triumphant. Just as we ask each other to pray for us (every day on this forum!), we believe those who are with God can also pray for us. Since Mary is the greatest of all His creation, we naturally ask her to help us out. If you knew GWB and wanted a favor done, but had a chance to get Laura to do the asking for you, would you ask her to assist you? The prayers of holy people are very effective - the Bible is full of such examples.

That would be true if they used the word "worship." Got a link to that?

Based upon their works, do any Catholic authors espouse any of these principles about Mary?

1. To honor and love as a deity.
2. To regard with ardent or adoring esteem or devotion. See Synonyms at revere1.
1. To participate in religious rites of worship.
2. To perform an act of worship.

I often recall with great amusement the folks who try to calculate the date the Earth was created, some being so certain and specific as to say "Yeah, and it was a Thursday, in October 4xxx B.C.!"

That was James Ussher, (or Usher) a Protestant (not Catholic) theologian. He dated creation to October 23, 4004 BC.

(Not that I have a dog in Protestant-Catholic debates. I am Orthodox Christian. Just to set the record straight.)

Yep, that pretty much sums it up - and it’s why I mostly keep myself from reading anything in the religion forum except the articles.

We have a fundamental difference of understanding about the state of the dead. I believe, based on scripture, that they're incapable of interceding in any way shape or form because they sleep in the grave awaiting resurrection. Additionally, the bible specifically tells us not to attempt to communicate with the dead. And finally, the bible teaches that sometimes demons will pretend to be spirits of loved ones.

Catholics do not worship Mary.

If that's the case then Daniel could have prayed to anyone he was instructed to, in order to be spared being thrown in the lion's den.

I think the Amish are “quaint” in their beliefs. Well...I think Catholics are “quaint” too with regard to Mary. We would all get along better as Christians if we took that attitude.

Hm. I think Paul had something to say about quaintness. Galatians 5 and Colossians 2:19-23

I'm astounded that I can post an article that states an opinion contrary to Catholic doctrine, run the thread in a respectful manner and almost right away be labeled a "Catholic hater".

The recent threads on FR that criticize or openly attack the catholic faith and those who follow it are distressing and ill-advised. Some experts, often protestants, will take the Bible as a book of quotes ready to apply and shape to make a particular argument and spread division, hatred and regression that is a detriment to us all as a society. This is quite distressing when we, as a presumably conservative group (I am speaking of FR as a whole), need to work for unity rather than division among the Christian believers as well as conservative Jews (there is a small but strong group) and others among us who are stronly opposed to the liberal doctrines. These “experts” are no better than politicians who use social and economic class, race, gender, etc. to divide rather than unify us by the strong common beliefs that join us - we know which political class does this most effectively.

When I attend catholic mass on Sunday I pray with the entire congregation the Liturgy of the Word: “We believe in one God, the father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one lord, Jesus Christ, eternally begotten of the father, God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God. Begotten, not made, one in being with the father, through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.”

We do not worship Mary. When we kneel as a congregation during the liturgy of the eucharist, we worship Jesus in the remembrance of the Last Supper, and the promise of eternal life through His sacrifice. We do not worship Mary.

Mary has a beautiful and we believe, very blessed role in our faith. God chose her to serve in life as mother of Jesus Christ and Himself created our Saviour’s life within her. Still, we do not worship her, we worship God as holy trinity, as we pray together as a congregation.

To what purpose is the spreading of this divisive anti-catholic polemic?

The article isn’t merely contrary to Catholic doctrine - it misstates what we believe. And I never labeled you anything.

Besides, I’m referring to the religion forum in general.

And I’m going to return to just reading the articles - if they’re worth reading.
