.- A new survey from Georgetown Universitys Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) indicates that Catholics may lean towards voting for the Democratic candidate for president in the 2008 election.
The CARA polling shows that only 21 percent of all Catholics are either strongly or weakly affiliated with the Republican Party in 2008, compared to 31 percent in 2004. Fewer Catholics identify themselves as Republicans than in any year since 2000.
Among all adult Catholics, 38 percent identify as a weak or strong Democrat, while 22 percent lean Democratic.
Republicans are found to be more numerous among the general electorate Catholic population, with 28 percent identifying themselves as Republicans and 17 percent saying they lean Republican. However, Catholics who attend Mass weekly are still more likely to be Democrats, with 37 percent self-identifying with the party and another 18 percent saying they lean Democrat.
Overall, these shifting Catholic attitude trends, less support for the use of U.S. military force, more support for higher taxes for wealthy Americans, and increasing acceptance of immigration, may favor the Democrats and Obama, said Mark Gray, the director of CARA Catholic polls.
Gray said that Democrats still must mobilize well to take advantage of their edge among Catholic voters. In the past two presidential elections the Republicans have been noted to be more effective at mobilizing voters using religion and religious organizationsoften using the issue of abortion, Gray said.
The CARA poll results suggest a shift in Catholics views on several major issues. In 2002, before the Iraq war, 63 percent of adult Catholics agreed somewhat or strongly with the statement that The U.S. should be willing to use military force to overthrow governments that support terrorism against the U.S., even if it mean losing lives of U.S. service members. In 2006, only 43 percent agreed.
Catholic support for a tax on the wealthiest Americans has increased from 52 percent in 2002 to 65 percent in 2006. Catholics are also less likely to agree that the number of immigrants permitted entry into the U.S. should be decreased, with agreement down from 65 percent in 2002 to 54 percent in 2006.
According to the study, pro-abortion sentiment has slightly increased among adult Catholics. In 2002, 55 percent somewhat or strongly agreed with the statement A woman should have the right to choose to abort an unwanted pregnancy. In 2006, the percentage in agreement increased to 58 percent.

Lukewarm Liturgy and a rejection of Mysticism have emptied out a lot of seats in the pews, which is where the Catechesis would take place.
Yes, though, I agree with you regarding the USCCB.
Born, raised and educated as a Roman Catholic. It’ll be a cold day in hell when any bishop can determine my vote.
No, I do not support Lightnin’. But it has nothing to do with what any bishop, or Pope for that matter says.
How anyone who purports to be Christian can vote democrat is beyond me especially Catholics ( maybe CINO’s I guess ).
I was at a ladies house yesterday, 73 year old widow, devoted Baptist, just a fine woman who had all sorts of Hussein literature around her house. I don’t get it.
Makes sense.
What religion are Latinos?
As their influence grows so shall the Churches.
That scene evokes shivers. May the Lord convert her heart and mind.
Wichita, Kansas, has **free** tuition for its Catholic youth. How do they pay for it? Answer: All Catholic parishioners are asked to tithe.
So??...I wonder?
Of the tithing paying Catholics in Wichita, and their kids graduating from their Catholic schools, I wonder how many support Democrats who promote abortion, push partial birth abortion, call for sex education in government schools , distribute birth control to minors, condone sex out of marriage, oppose school vouchers and tax credits, and legislate for homosexual marriage????
( Just wondering?)
Personally, I believe most of these polls reflex the opinions of Catholics who graduated from government schools and are now merely CINOs.
The statistics for evangelical youth (from strong and active Christian families) who graduate from government school, remaining faithful in their faith is ABYSMAL. Some studies show more than 88% leave their faith. Why would be any different for Catholic kids?
Also...Worse, studies show that youth graduating from government schools, who **claim** to be Christian hold beliefs that disqualify them from being Christian. Why would Catholic Christian youth have a better outcome?
If you want your kid to be Catholic, **homeschool** them!!!!
This is your **best** bet for keeping them active in the faith.... or... ( second best) get them into a Catholic school that teaches Catholicism and **not** Marxist Liberation Theology!
Those Catholics who would pull the lever for a candidate of the party of death, abortion and socialism aren’t very good Catholics.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I sincerely hope that it would have plenty to do with the candidates position on:
Abortion
Partial Birth Abortion
Marriage between a man and woman
Homosexual “rights”
Birth control distribution by the government ( especially in the schools)
Sex education in the government schools
Pushing homosexuality in the schools.
Vouchers and tax credits for private schools ( Catholic schools)
All First Amendment provisions.
The wrong stand on any of these issues should be a deal killer for any believing and practicing Christian ( Catholic or Protestant)!
Because their unions tell them to.
Among other things.
Mexico is a socialist country and has been in practice, if not name for over 100 years. That has a much bigger impact on it than being Catholic.
I thought this thread was about the US.
Why? Because they attended atheistic government schools that teach **all** subjects from a godless point of worldview!
Please read post #32. **That** is why Christians who should know better vote Democratic! By the time they graduate from government school, they are no longer Catholic. They are really Secular Humanists and don't even know it!
The research data on the success of the public schools in indoctrinating Christian youth with humanistic or neo-pagan worldviews is overwhelming. The Nehemiah Institute's worldview PEERS test shows that 83-percent of the children from committed Christian families in public schools adopt a secular humanist or Marxist socialist worldview. At the SBC's 2002 annual meeting, the Southern Baptist Council on Family Life reported, among other disturbing things, that 88-percent of the children raised in evangelical homes leave church at age 18. Barna Research reports that only 9-percent of born-again teens believe in moral absolutes, and more than half believe that Jesus sinned while He was on earth. We believe the fact that 80-percent of Christian families send their children to public schools is a prime reason for this lost legacy.

The Reagan Democrats who jumped to Perot are are hearing the job sucking sound and feeling the pressure of inflation. They are now more tuned into family economic issues, including jobs, health care and education costs. On social issues, helping the poor recruits more people at Church than abortion clinic protests.
The trains are passing each other in the night.
